A rather annoying book. The author assembled a huge mass of photographs of boats on Lake Tahoe, and wrote captions for them - but the captions sometimes don't really relate to the picture, and after the first chapter on the beginnings of white habitation and boating on the lake, there's not a lot of continuity or information on who/when/where. Individuals are identified, mostly as the owners of particular boats, then ignored - no idea who they were or how they relate to the history of Lake Tahoe aside from owning boats. There's a little about the rivalry that created Chris-Craft, but having finished the book I find I have no idea when that whole thing happened, or how it relates to anything other than Lake Tahoe regattas. If you really want to see a whole bunch of pictures of boats (mostly powerboats, mostly racers) on Lake Tahoe, you'll love this. If you wanted to know more about Lake Tahoe and its history...look elsewhere.… (mere)

I thoroughly enjoyed this interesting book. The main focus is the photographs of the nuclear landscapes, but the author's text added interesting background information on the sites and the hardships he had to endure (like sharks) to shoot some of the images. The photos from Enewetak Atoll are fascinating, and offer glimpses of long abandoned facilities that are rarely seen in photographs. This is a must for anyone interested in industrial archaeology or the atomic era.
