Molly Gloss har 16 tidligere arrangementer. (show) Molly Gloss - Falling From Horses Molly Gloss returns to Sunriver Books & Music December 6th at 5:00 PM for a presentation on her latest novel, Falling from Horses. Bud Frazier is the next generation from Gloss’s lovely story, The Hearts of Horses, the son of Martha and Henry. As the story opens in 1938 Bud sets out for Hollywood eager to make a name for himself as a stunt rider. His parents have lost their Echols Creek farm in Harney County, Oregon and he feels rootless. Bud was on horseback with his Mom before he could even walk. Riding horses is natural to him. He boards a bus for the bright lights with all the confidence of youth, blissfully unaware of the realities of being a stunt rider in the movies. On the bus he befriends Lily, a fierce young woman equally determined to make a name for herself in tinsel town as a script writer. Lily is enthralled with stories, the written word, and the translation of that magic to the silver screen. It is a friendship that will be lifelong. The story shifts between Bud’s time in Hollywood and his childhood on the farm with Martha and Henry and his little sister, Mary Claudine. Molly Gloss creates memorable characters, it was a real pleasure to re-visit Martha and Henry, see what they have been up to since Hearts of Horses. Bud and Lily are such striving, good young people, they may lose their way at times but they are true to themselves. Gloss is unstinting in her portrayal of the early years in Hollywood, what life on a movie set would be like for both the horses and their riders. Author events are free, they include light refreshments and door prizes. Sign up to attend by e-mailing sunriverbooks@sunriverbooks.com calling 541-593-2525 or stopping by Sunriver Books & Music.

Molly Gloss, Falling From Horses—Fiction In a new novel from the best-selling author of The Hearts of Horses and The Jump-Off Creek, a young ranch hand escapes a family tragedy and travels to Hollywood to become a stunt rider. In 1938, nineteen-year-old ranch hand Bud Frazer sets out for Hollywood. His little sister has been gone a couple of years now, his parents are finding ranch work and comfort for their loss where they can, but for Bud, Echol Creek, where he grew up and first learned to ride, is a place he can no longer call home. So he sets his sights on becoming a stunt rider in the movies -- and rubbing shoulders with the great screen cowboys of his youth. On the long bus ride south, Bud meets a young woman who also harbors dreams of making it in the movies, though not as a starlet but as a writer, a "real" writer. Lily Shaw is bold and outspoken, confident in ways out of proportion with her small frame and bookish looks. But the two strike up an unlikely kinship that will carry them through their tumultuous days in Hollywood, and, as it happens, for the rest of their lives. Acutely observed, Falling from Horses charts what was to be a glittering year in the movie business through the wide eyes and lofty dreams of two people trying to make their mark on the world, or at least make their way in it. Molly Gloss weaves a remarkable tale of humans and horses, hope and heartbreak, narrated by one of the most winning narrators ever to walk off the page.
Molly Gloss is the best-selling author The Hearts of Horses, The Jump-Off Creek, winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the Oregon Book Award, The Dazzle of Day, winner of the PEN Center West Fiction Prize, and Wild Life, winner of the James Tiptree Jr. Award.

Fiction Book Club- The Hearts of Horses Molly Gloss , The Hearts of Horses.Fiction Book Club should have an interesting time this month. Molly Gloss will speak about her book on Saturday the 17th of January, giving everyone the chance to hear this very talented author’s perspective on her book. Molly is not scheduled to be with us for book club, we are grateful for her Saturday appearance. The Hearts of Horses is a wonderful story. Martha is more comfortable around horses than people. With the men off fighting in WWI she is able to find work in a small Eastern Oregon ranching community breaking young horses. As she teaches the horses what they need to know in life, she gets to know the people and becomes a part of the community. (booksense)… (mere)
