This catalogue was produced for a comprehensive exhibition of art treasures housed in Leipzig. It includes objects from some 10 museums, archives, libraries, publishers, firms, and private individuals. The exhibtion was arranged around themes: the exposition city (Messestadt); the literary city (Buchstadt); the musical city (Musikstadt), the city of science and learning (Hochchulstadt) and the city of museums and collections (Thresaurus Lipsiensis: Schätze aus Museen und Sammlungen). The documentation, texts and photographs are first class and this book is a treasure trove for anyone who might want to visit Leipzig. What is particularly interesting is that it also covers the lesser known works of art often left aside by such undertakings, This exhibition was sponsored by the then German Democratic Republic in special celebration of its 40 years of independence (40. Jahrestag der Gründung der DDR) and the effort put into it was state funded; shortly after the start of the exhibtion was the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989) and during its stay in Austria the DDR was on the way to absorbtion by the Federal Republic of Germany (completed 4 October 1990).
