This book was a bit of fresh air to read. A lot of books have become a bit predictable lately, and while not the authors fault as it seems the only the cliche-ish of books seem to get popular (at least to me). I really did enjoy this, but I am really happy that it was short stories as opposed to one long story. I like that I was not able to predict what was going to happen. I was also eager to check out every new story to see where the author would take it.

Of course you know that when you have a anthology filled with stories not all of them could be great and I did not like every single one of them. I wont list them here but I will list a couple of my favorite stories

On Loving Bad Boys: A Villainelle by: Valya Dudycz Lipescu
Single, Singularity by: John Hornor Jacobs
Chosen by: Anton Strout
Santa CIS (Episode 1: No Saint) by: Alethea Kontis
The First Blood of Poppy Dupree by: Deliah S. Dawson

While there were much more I like, these were the stories I wish the author would expand upon. I would love full books on this especially the Santa CIS. The stories I did like far out-weighed the stories I didn't like. I recommend this book for anyone who is tired of the everyday fairy tale and needs something new

War Stories is a pretty big collection of fiction. You really can't go wrong with 23 action packed tales running the timeline of war from Vietnam and into the far off future. You get a little of everything- horror, conspiracy, science fiction, and fantasy all rolled into one.

I don't think there is a dud in the collection. Some stories ended a bit differently than I expected but it made sense and fit with the story. Some notable stories for me- Ghost Girl by Rich Larson, The Radio by Susan Jane Bigelow, The Valkyrie by Maurice Broaddus, and Invincible by Jay Posey. I could go on but listing all the stories as impressive should be clear with the 5 star rating. A big high five to the editors for gathering a massive amount of talent here too.… (mere)

Very good: barretta, orsi, nagata, dyer.
Good: Haldeman.
Ok: larson, yoon.
Not that great, bad and very bad: the rest.
So, about half are actually worth reading, which is pretty good for a milscifi anthology, to be honest.

Stars: 2.5 out of 5.

This really was a bit of a disappointment. The premise was interesting and had so much potential. I mean, what better place to tell all the urban legends of different places and countries, right? Yep, that didn't happen.

Instead we have a collection of mostly uninspired short stories, some of which don't really have anything to do with the concept of the book. I'm looking at you, the Corpse from Chicago. I mean, this story read straight like a short story in an urban fantasy series... which isn't bad in itself, but this collection is supposed to be about magical places in our real world, not an invented one... or did I read that definition wrong?

All in all, it was disappointing. I couldn't even tell you if there was a story I liked best, because they were pretty unremarkable. But it served its purpose as a palet cleanser between bigger books, so I guess that's that.
