Introduction:
The Rise and Fall of Wetlands of California’s Great Central Valley by Philip Garone discusses the history of the loss of wetlands throughout California and what people have caused to degrade the land. The author also inputs varies pictures and diagrams about how dramatically has the wetlands of California been degraded. The author also presents, specific details of individuals that discuss the effects that wetlands can have on the environment as well as recounts of individuals about how vast and beautiful wetlands used to be before their aesthetics was taken and transformed into into dry sediment.

Summary:
Philip Garone provides information about California’s wetlands and how dramatically they declined do to the fact companies destroyed with with development and cost the degradation of wetlands. Garone also mentions that when wetlands were initially being destroyed because they posed a threat to humanity. People thought that they were disease infected for the fact wetlands are so densely diverse with a variety of different species. Living near wetlands did pose problems to people, “ Centered on the valley’s wetlands, the malaria epidemic of 1833 belied California’s early reputation as a salubrious local, with its sunny skies and mild temperatures.” (55). People thought that wetlands were just a disease carrying land that did no good for anybody. Not really taking in consideration the value that these lands had and how viciously it would affect humans and the environmental later on. Garone also talks about the effects that the destruction of this lands caused to other environments. For example, “Riparian vegetation the Central Valley was quickly destroyed in the wake of the Gold Rush, when many prospectors turned toward agriculture as a source of a more stable livelihood.” As wetlands were being destroyed so was the entire ecosystem that was living in those wetlands. Not only were people destroying a simple land that contained water. But an entire ecosystem that was vital for the entire environment.
Evaluation:
This source contains consistent information about the wetlands of California and how much they affected the environment because of the destruction of wetlands. Garone gives several details about how wetlands were once an abundant land that had a large amount of vegetation, but because people that of this lands as being destructive towards them then that is when they decided to destroy these very important lands. This source is a reliable source because it gives information that has been cited and the sources that it the author gets its information from also comes from a reliable source. Garone’s research has been a long term research that explains wetlands on a broad and specific spectrum and fully and clearly expresses his research and also his opinion. Garone’s opinion can be considered biased, since he does only focus on the point that wetland destruction is completely bad and the only way to save the environment is to restore wetlands and stop the destruction. The author does pose any counter arguments that would state how wetlands can be replaced with other man made constructions, like aquifers, levees, and dams.
Argument:
Garone’s argument is clearly how the destruction of wetlands have has been a long term consequence and that people needed to realize how destructive, wetlands destruction is now. “Today’s migrating waterbirds have been arriving in a valley far different from the one known by their forebears...the wetlands of the Central Valley experienced nearly a century of accelerating century.” Garone’s perspective is the how wetlands over time have been deteriorating and the harmful effects that it caused for the environment.
Conclusion:
Philip Garone’s The Fall and Rise of the Wetlands of California’s Great Central Valley presents a vivid and clear perspective of what transpired in the loss of wetlands in California. As well as what were the driving forces for such losses and what can we do to help. The research that he gives is consistent, giving the whole view of what caused to the destruction of wetlands, and how are wetlands now.
