There are typical Patrick Gale themes in this novel, from its Cornwall location to the mother-son relationship: Laura works hard to raise Charles alone after the death of her husband when Charles is young, and expects him to do his share when he's finished school at 16. War takes him away but at the end of it, he returns and seems to close the door to a life outside his home with her and his work.

An accidental violent death of Deborah's husband brings her to stay with Judith, her sister, and Judith's partner Joanna. With unresolved family tensions, resentments and secrets, it's a tricky period. OK, but not my favourite Gale.

Disappointing for a Patrick Gale book. Gay Hilary finds and takes home a baby. His lover Rufus becomes the lover of Hilary’s sister. Too many improbable plot elements for me to believe the story.

One of the strands of the story follows a family, sans its father, on their usual summer stay in the country, and the other a policewoman in London investigating a series of crimes related to astrology and predictions of the future. The thing in common isn't obvious for a long time, and the overall impression I had was one of confusion.
