This book must have been a sensation when it was first published. Frost, a former communications officer at the Communications Security Establishment, decided to come forward with stories of his time at the CSE and demonstrate that, contrary to popular belief, Canada was actively spying on other countries, rather than just performing counterespionage activities. The book was published in 1994, and the description of tradecraft and technology is almost quaint nearly 25 years on. That said, the core issues are still relevant today: the toll that spying for one’s country takes on agents and their families, the technological arms race between nations, relations between the U.S. and Canada, accountability vs. secrecy, and more.

Michel Gratton, the scribe of Mike Frost’s expertise, writes well and is able to explain technology in a relatively simple way. I could, however, have done with better contextualization for the figures inserted at various points in the book. I gathered that they were supposed to illustrate something being explained in the text, but there were no in-text references to these figures (e.g., “Figure A shows the telecommunications network set up in the embassy.”).

Recommended if you like espionage memoirs or want to know more about a little-known area of the Canadian government (and really, WHO DOESN’T).
