This is a thoroughly researched and wonderfully imagined story, a match-up between two of history's most fascinating and mysterious men. The author makes skillful use of the known historical details of Houdini's time in Russia and the rise of Rasputin to weave a plausible tale of a clash between the two larger-than-life figures—a clever book and a great read!

Another one from the small press/self published stack (actually I got it at a stall at last years Boston Book Festival

The Adventure of the Spook House is a nice piece of fan service and fan fantasy wish fulfillment.

Suppose that the legendary escape artist (and spiritualist debunker) Harry Houdini, and the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got drawn into tackling a mystery in the American Southland that may involve spiritualism and ghosts and voices from beyond.

Houdini and Doyle team up with a young female spirit medium who may be a fake (or may not be) but is smart and feisty and good company along the road.

It's a good thumping adventure and the author has done his homework - no real glaring anachronisms and the facts of Houdini's and Doyle's lives are honestly presented.

The problem is i guess that neither Houdini or Doyle come off as as very deep or engaging characters and the writing gets thrown off course showing of the author's research and forgetting about telling a good story. This would be a good script for a graphic novel, as a book it's a little thin.

Don't know if this is going to be a series - in which case maybe the next one will work out better.

But a B+ effort this time around. I enjoyed it - wish it had been better.

Who would have thought that I am now a historical fan? Well at least when it comes to SOME novels! I loved how Houdini pulled the wool over so many phonies and I loved how he escaped time after time! The novel is over 500 pages, but it is SO GOOD that I hated to read THE END! Houdini was in Russia to perform his escape of their INESCAPABLE CELL and I marveled at the shocked faces of their police and how he took down so many, but I worried that he, his wife, and his assistant would NEVER GET out of Russia. What an AWESOME NOVEL!… (mere)

Full Disclosure: Once upon a time I was a closet fan of the Weekly World News. I was captivated by the over the top headlines and I got a kick reading through pages of strange, outlandish, and weird stories. I never thought for a second that there was any validity to any of them, but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of reading those stories.

When I discovered that C. Michael Forsyth had written a compilation of stories that never made it onto the pages of that venerable tabloid, I had to read them. Bizarre did not disappoint. Although it has been over two decades since I last read the Weekly World News, the stories felt familiar and comfortable. Reading this book brought fond memories of musings about vampires, the devil, elves, and celestial spirits. This was a treasure trove of delightfully goolish stories. I had a smile on my face as I read the book, which turned out to be a quick read. Even when I was rolling my eyes, I still did it with a smile. Even if the Weekly World News is not your cup of tea, I would still suggest giving it a try. This was a fun trip back in time.
