I thought this was going to be about her relationship with her father, who was in prison from the blurb. That was not the case, so I was disappointed. The more I read, however; the more I liked it. I did not like her mother, with whom she had a contentious relationship. I think this effected her own self-image.

I generally try not to rate memoirs and that will be the case with this book.

This memoir was interesting. I started it last year but I don’t think I was in the headspace to read someone’s story.

Now that I have, I am glad. She takes us on a wild journey. Growing up without a father. He was incarcerated. However, she felt he understood and loved her the most in her family. She was brought by her mother and grandmother. Buut, her relationship with her mother was so complicated and distraught. I hated it. She always wanted to please her mom and I think it hurt her. She explores both relationships and you honestly go through a myriad of emotions with her through out the book.

I especially loved the part where she talks about her relationship with her father. It’s a perspective I’ve never heard of or read in a book and it really made me think and cry for her. You can be the villain in someone’s story and an angel in another’s story . These are the vibes I got from that story. I mean when you think about someone who’s incarcerated, you never think this person could be someone’s parent. But Ashley humanized her father and she just gave us her story. Who her father was to her, and what he wasn’t as well. I really hope for her sake, that she got to experience pure unadulterated parental love and care after he got out.

I love how she writes and loved how she narrated the book so I’m going to be watching out for her other books.

Dazzling writing animates this powerful memoir in ways that leave me 1) deeply satisfied as a reader and 2) confounded as a writer. How does Ford unfold her story with so much power and grace? I listened to her read her own story and could not stop!

3.5 rounded up. This was beautifully written and funny and painful and interesting. Ford has a strong voice and she somehow managed to write about incredible trauma with clarity and introspection.

It felt incomplete though. I appreciate that the characters are revealed to us as the author experiences them, but they ended up flat and one-dimensional as a result. For example, it was mind blowing to me that she casually mentioned her mom was a correctional officer, a profession very often linked to brutality, without any connection to her mother’s volatility and abuse. I really wanted Ford to examine the motives of the women and men in her life. I was also left feeling frustrated by the passive conclusion. The confrontation and resolution I spent the whole book waiting for never came.… (mere)
