I have friends who enjoyed this book a lot and recommended it for being dark and original, two things for which I should have loved it.
It is - congratulations for that.
And I didn't.
Perhaps because I felt the writing to be stiff and the dialogues pompous, the characters lacking depth or simply because the story did not catch me, feeling more like a superhero(es) story than dark fantasy (I do not like anything with superheroes). I am not sure, but I did not go past 100 pages.

Absolutely, completely, fantastically, wonderfully brutal and beautiful. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but I enjoyed every bold twist. I loved this so much and I cannot wait to read more of this series and other books by this author.
This is not a book for the soul that is searching for a hero, whether that hero is unlikely, reluctant, or not. This is a book that is nothing but the deepest, darkest flaws and insanity of humanity as we know it on display. Violent and brutal, it makes no apologies in showcasing the absolute worst in all of us.
And now, imagine if that absolute worst could manifest and become powerful magic.
I found myself both in awe at the creativity at the magic system and disgusted by the world....a bit too close to how I feel about it today. Which means the writer did perfectly at what they meant to convey.
Also, reading this book made me have the urge to shower every chapter. Good job.
That doesn't mean it isn't a good read. It just means that you won't find any happily-ever-after here and if that's the kind of story you want--no need to stop here. But if hope is a word best used as a curse to you, then you might want to try this book out.
