A tale of vampires and the price of immortality. Narain works as a chef in Chicago. His partner Sophie has died and he is dealing with the loss. He was made into a vampire during WWI along with his captain Jameson. They have different viewpoints on being a vampire and Narain finds himself dragged back in as he faces against monsters and his own inner demons. I thought this was a different look at vampires, so glad they're not boring love interests. There is quite a bit of backstory but I thought it was a great story. Definitely worth reading.… (mere)

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this book with the military history integral to the story. History has never been my favorite subject. I was pleasantly surprised that the characters won me over. Without giving too much away, I had to stop reading the last part of the book on the train to work when tears threatened to spill. That's how attached I became to the characters. I've read many supernatural books over the years. Not to mention all the movies and tv shows I've seen. Laura has found a fresh take that I thoroughly enjoyed.… (mere)
