Constantinople in the age of Justinian af Glanville Downey
"The Centers of Civilization" series of handbooks is generally quite useful in providing a quick look at famous cities during their most flourishing periods. Constantinople (Currently Istanbul) has the distinction of being covered twice. The reader gets a somewhat useful map, as well as some material dealing with the city's industries, and infrastructure as a national capital. It is of course, too short.
