Kort biografi
Rita Dove is the author of several books of poetry. A former Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Dove also served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she teaches at the University of Virginia. [2013]

Many of my favorite collections bundled together in one great book. Dove's poems blend the personal with the historical showing us pivotal moments, injustices endured with courage and intelligence, through the concrete examples from dusting, to cooking, to building zeppelins, to a company picnic to war on the other side of the ocean. Well crafted but what always grabs me by the throat in Dove's poem is the persona, speakers who take us inside the mind whose day to day being is constantly shaping and being shaped by history.… (mere)

This is not my first reading and it won't be my last. Thomas and Beulah is a great love letter from the poet to her grandparents, and whether or not the stories contained are exact they provide the kind of truth that only a poet can give.

Splitting the collection into two strong Points of View, shows art dealing with opposites, male/female, light/dark, black/white -- the poems start in a place that feel deeply personal. But the great poems that start with the personal, by being specific touch on something revealing about their culture and the history. This collection has much to teach about the Northern Migration and the effects of race, economics, labor and segregation on the psyche. Worth multiple reads.… (mere)

Delightful. Sonnets, exploring Demeter and Persephone, I loved every thought.

These are powerful poems, some about public figures, some deeply personal. I truly appreciated Ms. Dove's end notes because I often understood that I was reading about an important historical event or person, but couldn't quite place it. I was happy to be educated.

The book is broken into six sections. While I found meaning throughout, my favorite sections were "After Egypt" (with poems such as "Elevator Man, 1949") and "Little Book of Woe" (about her MS diagnosis; "Soup" is perhaps my favorite in this collection). And don't skip the book's intro, "Prose in a Small Space." It sets the tone.

Playlist for the Apocalypse was an NPR, NYT, and Publishers Weekly best book of 2021 and also won the 2022 Library of Virginia Literary Award for Poetry. I can see why. It's not that Dove writes about life-changing events, big and small, but how she writes about them. And thank goodness she does. As summed up in "Climacteric":

"...If loving every minute spent jostling syllables / while out in the world others slog through their messes / implies such shuttered industry is selfish or irresponsible // then I'm the one who's fled. Ta-ta! I'm not ashamed; / each word caught right is a pawned memory, humbly reclaimed."
