Following a three year series on the 125 years of electric utility service, engineering historian and researcher Joseph Cunningham will present “Railway Electrification: Advantages and Costs,” a topic on which he has authored numerous articles and books. Electric propulsion of railways is often promoted as a means to increase capacity, reduce travel time and dependence on oil. It is not, however, a panacea for transportation problems. It is expensive, requires a total system wide investment, and is now impacted heavily by the volatile pricing of electric power supply more than at any time in the past. All of these issues and more will be explored in an overview of what has been done, what is in place, and the issues which will determine future strategies. (alibrarian)
