Jonathan Coe har 4 tidligere arrangementer. (show) JONATHAN COE in conversation with SYLVIA BROWNRIGG Credit: Matilda Coe Jonathan Coe in conversation with Sylvia Brownrigg Tuesday, September 9, 7:30 p.m. Expo 58A comic spy caper and international love story, set in Europe in the middle of the last century, Expo 58 is the latest sublime creation by Jonathan Coe, hailed by Nick Hornby as “probably the best English novelist of his generation.”
“Handsome, unassuming Thomas Foley is an employee at the Central Office of Information whose particular biography (Belgian mother, pub-owning father) makes him just the man to oversee the “authentic British pub” that will be erected at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. It’s the first major expo after World War II, meant to signify unity, but there’s inevitable intrigue involving the U.S. and Soviet delegations.
Jonathan Coe is the author of The Winshaw Legacy and nine other novels. His many prizes include the Everyman Wodehouse Prize and the Samuel Johnson Prize.
Sylvia Brownrigg is the author of several acclaimed works of fiction: four novels--Morality Tale, The Delivery Room, Pages for You, and The Metaphysical Touch--and a collection of stories, Ten Women Who Shook the World. Morality Tale was described in the New York Times as "divinely deadpan", and in the San Francisco Chronicle as a "witty parable of marriage." The Delivery Room won the Northern California Book Award for best novel.

"How does the novelist refract, through the haze of memory, the secret history of a life long-lived? How does the past hold the present in its thrall? And how do these recollections help shape our understanding of our own lives? Two new novels explore this fertile terrain with compelling results." (christiguc)… (mere)

"This year is the 30th anniversary of Virago Modern Classics - dedicated to the celebration of women writers and founded by Carmen Callil. Novelist Jonathan Coe freely acknowledges his debt to these rediscovered female authors. They discuss the impact of Virago on writers and readers and the influence of Rosamond Lehmann on Coe’s new novel, The Rain Before it Falls, a traumatic family saga, set in the second-half of the 20th century. Jonathan Coe’s previous books include the award-winning What a Carve Up and The Rotter’s Club. Carmen Callil is the author of Bad Faith." (christiguc)… (mere)
