Kort biografi
Ajay Chowdhury is the inaugural winner of the Harvill Secker-Bloody Scotland crime fiction award. He is a tech entrepreneur and theatre director who was born in India and now lives in London where he builds digital businesses, cooks experimental dishes for his wife and daughters and writes through the night. His children's book, Ayesha and the Firefish, was published in 2016 and adapted into a musical.

The Waiter, published in 2021, is the first in his warm, funny and spicy adult crime series about Kamil Rahman, an ex-policeman from Calcutta who has moved to Brick Lane in London. It has been optioned for television by Moonage Pictures. Follow up, The Cook, was published in May 2022 to critical acclaim and deals with the issue of homelessness. The third book on the series - The Detective - is about government surveillance and will be published in April 2023.

Dismissed and disgraced Kolkata detective Kamil Rahman moves to London to shake off his past but he soon finds himself attempting to solve another murder, and to his amazement finds the events are connected, and that people have followed him to London.

A competently constructed first novel with an interesting scenario.

Parem kui esimene, kohe oluliselt. Ja lõputvisti mina küll ei näinud tulemas, isegi ei aimanud - tõmbas kenasti vaiba alt ära.
Ühtlasi on järgmiseks Londoni külastuseks juba Brick Lane programmi võetud.

Kamil Rahman has finally officially joined the Metropolitan Police as a detective. he may be the new boy but Tahir is his mentor and so he is given opportunities. When a tech CEO is murdered there is panic around a billion dollar sale of secret software and others associated with program are also dispatched. Meanwhile Kamil's friend Anjoli is investigating the bones uncovered at the original crime scene, related to an unreported murder over 100 years ago.
I have really loved the first two novels in this series, they are sparky and a little different. Of course it helps that they are set in the area I used to live in. However what is really strong here is that issues around prejudice are explored in a completely natural and non-hyped manner - Hindu/Muslim, anti-Semitism, institutional racism etc. The way these are wound deep into the plot without appearing as gratuitous add-ons is excellent.… (mere)
