The author follows the path Alexander Mackenzie took in attempt to discover the NW Passage. Spent the whole book describing the grueling descent of the river, but none explaining how the explorer managed to re-ascend the river! That would seem to be the more difficult challenge!

STAMPEDE by Brian Castner 4 STARS

NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE

This is an interesting novel about the famous Klondike Gold Rush. From the initial discovery of gold to the thousands of people who dropped everything to run for the gold. Desperate folks who thought they could get rich quickly but most found only pain and heartache.

The story is told in more of a story form, yet still giving the details about who found gold first, at which locations. The gold rush was 1896-1899, with the stampede being 1897-1898. Few people got rich from the gold that they found. They discovered that the inflation of regular things like food or supplies went up.

The book has a plethora of historical facts about the stampede, it would appeal to history buffs. Some of it was interesting to me, but I lost interest in it, somewhere in the middle.

Thankfully, I received a complimentary copy of #stampede @stampede from #netgalley I was under no obligation to post a review.

An excellent book telling the story of Alexander Mackenzie and his trip up the Mackenzie River. The story is interspersed with the author's own trip in 2016. The story is well written and easy to read. I enjoyed it very much.

A unique juxtaposition of the author’s own adventures paddling down the Mackenzie River from Fort Chipewyan to Garry Island in the NWT in 2016 with those of Alexander Mackenzie in June/July 1789. There’s enough detail here to suit lovers of Canadian history, and sufficient wilderness action to satisfy the hardiest of canoeing enthusiasts. It was such an engaging read, I forced myself to set a daily time limit so as to get on with my life outside of reading.
