Mike Carey (born 1959), also known by his pen name M. R. Carey, is a British writer of comic books, novels, and films, known for the novel The Girl with All the Gifts, as well as its 2016 film adaptation.

Carey was born in Liverpool, England, in 1959 – describing his young self as "one of those ominously quiet kids... who lived so much inside my own head I only had vestigial limbs". As a child, he maintained an interest in comics, writing and drawing primitive stories to entertain his younger brother. He studied English at St Peter's College, Oxford, before becoming a teacher. He continued to teach for 15 years before moving on to writing comics.

I mean it’s alright but not The Girl with all the Gifts alright. That one was a 5 star, btw.
I found Fellside’s story to be interesting, but it went too boringly deep into the paranormal. Those scenes when Jess left her body to go to The Other Place? Too many, too long and too weird.
That being said, the rest of it is quite gripping.
Jess finds herself in a remote prison in the Yorkshire moors called Fellside. She is there because she was charged with the murder of a small boy called Alex who was her neighbour. Apparently, she set fire to her apartment and ended up accidentally killing Alex.
With no will to live and burnt to a crisp, Jess starts to hear someone trying to communicate with her; but who? It almost sounds like a small child…
Go there if you like paranormal stuff. The ending is good.

M. R. Carey got his start as a successful creator of comics, most notably in Marvel’s X-Men series. He has since written more than a dozen novels, including The Girl with All the Gifts (2014). In Infinity Gate, Carey creates a near-future multiverse that demonstrates that dystopias come in several flavors.
We begin in a dystopian Lagos, Nigeria, its university depopulated as gang violence threatens the campus. A physicist, Hadiz Tambuwal, works alone with only the newly emerged AI to help her. When her work on quantum mechanics reveals an undeveloped alternate Earth, she hopes its resources can be used to solve her own world’s problems. But the multiverse has already developed several uber-states of its own. When a large multi-world bureaucracy called the Pandominion spots her, she becomes the lynchpin in a multi-world, multi-species power struggle.
I highly recommend Paul Di Filippo’s review in Locus (https://locusmag.com/2023/04/paul-di-filippo-reviews-infinity-gate-by-m-r-carey/) in which he rightly compares Infinity Gate to such diverse works as Keith Laumer’s Worlds of the Imperium, William Gibson’s Peripheral, Ian McDonald’s Everness, and even Richard Adams Watership Down.
The second volume in the series is due out later this spring.

It was ok, nothing more. A friend had talked it up as being sci-fi, but it wasn’t really. Or rather, if one categorises it as sci-fi, then it’s under post-apocalyptic zombie sci-fi.

I found everything after they left the base a bit tedious, and I didn’t actually like the shift in POV between characters. I would have much preferred only Melanie’s narrative.

Speaking of Melanie, I must agree with Dr Caldwell on the matter of her humanity. She’s a zombie, sorry I meant to say *hungry*, not a little girl.

Hungry is one of the more stupid terms for zombies yet, and it contrasts harshly and unfavourably with the rather intriguing concepts of what the zombie virus in this novel actually is.

I didn’t enjoy the ending but as the author had written their way into a corner, there wasn’t really any other possibility than the special hungries like Melanie inheriting the earth.

I think this is a DNF despite the pre-release fanfare because I can't engage w/ the story and already feel like I know where its going.
