This was my first read by author JL Campbell, and I have to be honest. This book had so much island flavor, I felt as if I were sitting in the character's living room, listening to them converse. Ms. Campbell's writing is vivid, colorful, and realistic. This book had me laughing in a couple of spots, crying in others, and fighting mad. Even though it is fiction, it touches on a very real subject, infidelity. There is a message in this well-written story, and if I had to sum it up in two words, it would be forgiveness and compassion.

The story is easy to follow, and quickly engages the reader; you find yourself swiftly immersed in the book. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone!

"Perfection Sisters -in-Love Book 1" by J. L. Campbell

What I liked about this novel.....

"Perfection" was a very interesting New Adult read about Tasha and Karim. This was definitely not perfect in that all was good but rather a lots of things in both of these characters life would have to be faced hard on. Now how will this story come out when Tasha finds the one she loves may not fit in that certain picture of 'perfection' that she seemed to hold so high. What will she do? The author gives the reader a good read with her style of writing, with well developed, defined, well portrayed and believable characters along with cultural references [in the Caribbean] in such a intriguing storyline that will keep your attention. I loved how this author was able to bring the reader a wonderful love story, with friendship and the family scenarios. I hope in the future series of {Sisters-in-Love} we find out even more about these two main characters Natasha and Karim. I will say that after reading book one I look forward to book 2 which will be about Kelleigh and Joshua.

Great job to the author!

I received a copy through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This collection gives a peek into what led up to the novel Distraction. If you’ve already read Distraction, you’ll enjoy this look at these characters. If you’re considering one of J.L. Campbell’s books, this is a good way to get a taste of her writing style.

I loved this look inside Kyra’s head:
Kyra felt like a case a psychologist would refer to on a radio talk show; so often they discuss boys who suffered when their fathers abused their mothers, yet grew up to become wife beaters. In her way, she was like them - a woman who’d seen her mother survive terrible situations because of immature men, but couldn’t seem to avoid serial relationships herself.

Kyra almost gets near to be raped by her deadbeat ex, in a scene that's both chilling and realistic.

We see not only what is happening to the three Jamaican women: Justine, Dionne, and Kyra, but we get a peek inside the heads of the men with whom they are involved: Milton, Xavier, Alex, and even Mr. Crusty Feet himself.

The only reason I'm not rating this a five is because I don't think it quite works as a stand-alone work or a collection of short stories, each with beginnings, middles, and ends, but I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend this author.

One of the reasons that I like Ms. Campbell’s novels is they’re like taking a little trip to Jamaica, only one that fits my current budget.

Yolanda, Justine’s 14-year-old daughter, is playing guitar. Unknown to Justine, the music shop, Rapporté, where Yolanda prefers to shop and have her guitar worked on, belongs to Xavier. Xavier, the man with whom Justine broke off a passionate affair, seven years ago. The man who is 6 ½ year-old Emile’s father, but doesn’t know it.

Until the day a now-widowed Justine brings Yolanda’s guitar in for more work, and Emile follows his mother into the shop, while Xavier comes out to meet this super-fussy customer.

This novel continues the story of Justine and Xavier from Distraction, but works on its own as a stand-alone; you don’t have to read Distraction to enjoy this novel. However, unlike Distraction, only has one storyline, that of Justine and Xavier. While girlfriends Dionne and Kyra do make cameo appearances, they do not carry their own storylines.

While it takes Xavier only one glance to realize that Emile is his son, he does not know that Justine is widowed. She does not know that Xavier has been separated from his wife for two years, and has already filed for divorce. This novel is about how these two people, who are still so strongly drawn to one another, learn to admit the chemistry is still there, to forgive past wounds, and to work towards a relationship that is complicated by their children.

I felt like this started out a bit slow, and Justine was irritatingly wussy at first. In the middle, it really caught fire. The chapter headings that all begin with a Jamaican proverb are wonderful, and I liked getting to hear from Xavier’s point of view.

The teen girls are interesting in that Justine is overinvolved in Yolanda’s life, while Xavier’s soon-to-be-ex, Annette is seriously underinvolved with Kelleigh, yet despite different kinds of mothering, the girls share identical issues with mouthiness and rebellion. Can’t win for losing!

In the end, despite desperate attempts by Annette to get back at Justine using Emile, it seems like they are well on their way to becoming a happy, blended family.

Or are they?
