- Roberto Calasso (Florence, 1941) promoveerde op jonge leeftijd bij Mario Praz en trad vervolgens in dienst bij de vooraanstaande uitgeverij Adelphi te Milaan, waarvan hij sinds 1968 directeur is. Hij debuteerde in 1974 met L’impuro folle, over het geval-Schreber, een van de meest intrigerende kwesties uit de geschiedenis van de psycho-analyse. In 1983 volgde La rovina di Kasch, waarin hij een nieuwe geschiedenis schrijft van de Europese cultuur sinds de romantiek. Zijn internationale doorbraak kwam in 1988 met De bruiloft van Cadmus en Harmonia, dat inmiddels in meer dan tien talen werd vertaald.

Giving this one a five for the good feeling it gave me of dwelling in the presence of shared sentiment. (And Calasso's writing, of course.)
Un saggio d'altri tempi, agile e interessante.
Scorrendo con gli occhi queste poche pagine, ci si sente improvvisamente compresi nella propria bibliofila follia.
"Essenziale è comprare molti libri che non si leggono subito. Poi, a distanza di un anno, o di due anni, o di cinque, dieci, venti, trenta, quaranta, potrà venire il momento in cui si penserà di aver bisogno esattamente di quel libro."
Scorrendo con gli occhi queste poche pagine, ci si sente improvvisamente compresi nella propria bibliofila follia.

Appena terminata la lettura di Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia, posso definirlo il migliore libro sulla mitologia greca che abbia mai letto. Con grande grazia, Calasso è riuscito ad unire un romanzo che raccontasse i miti greci e un saggio sul loro significato.
Infatti, la bellezza di questo romanzo (o saggio?) sulla mitologia greca sta nell'aver inglobato nel mito il suo significato, così come presumibilmente veniva percepito in origine. Ma non solo: Calasso ci mostra il filo conduttore che dal mito arriva fino ad oggi. Forse abbiamo dimenticato chi fossero Teseo, Achille o Edipo, ma ciò che questi miti volevano trasmettere è ancora con noi, nella nostra forma mentis, nella nostra letteratura, nella nostra psicologia. Questa è la forza di Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia: far riflettere il lettore di oggi con miti tutt'altro che morti e sepolti.
Da appassionata di mitologia greca, non ho trovato difficile seguire la narrazione dei miti, anche se mi rendo conto che per un neofita potrebbe essere difficoltoso destreggiarsi tra nomi, genealogie e intrecci (il romanzo, tra l'altro, non presenta nessun glossario). In ogni caso, si tratta di un libro impegnativo, vuoi per lo stile alto in cui è scritto, vuoi per la complessità della materia trattata.… (mere)

This brief book is one to read, reread, and consult when reading the great literature with ancient beginnings since it provides an extraordinary and perceptive analysis of the nature of the literature of classical mythology.
