A gripping story, well written, and visually descriptive. Reading the first book might help with the references, otherwise, the overall story can be read as a standalone. While the writing is at times endearing, some interactions seem pointless since they don't add to the story, and the narrative seems young. Jack Calloway has a humorous side to him, revealed in the remarks he makes to himself, borderline breaking the fourth wall. The story is dialogue-heavy, which contradicts the really nice first chapter of no dialogue. There are a lot of characters introduced, it takes time to keep up with who is who. It also takes time to care about the characters. Nonetheless, the story is attention-grabbing.
