Captain Robert N. Buck retired from TWA after 37 years, beginning with the Douglas DC-2 and ending with the Boeing 747. He served as TWA's chief pilot, was director of thunderstorm research, and flew over 2000 Atlantic crossings. During World War II he was engaged in weather research for the U.S. vis mere Air Corps, flying a B-17 and a Black Widow P-61; for this he was awarded, as a civilian, the Air Medal by President Harry Truman. In 1930, at age 16, he flew alone across the United States, breaking the junior transcontinental speed record. More recently, buck has been an air safety consultant to the FAA and various airlines and has worked with the International Civil Aviation Organization--the UN part of aviation--to develop a new plan of world airspace. vis mindre
