A fun country house murder mystery set in Ireland written in the style of, I would say, Agatha Christie and perhaps Midsomer Murders. It starts off slowly, then the pace gathers speed, galloping along to an unexpected finish. There are many and varied characters. I particularly liked Merlin the cat. He’s such a hero and a great little personality. I also liked Clarissa who put me in mind of Endora from ‘Bewitched’. She’s a hoot, I almost expected her to dust off her broomstick! There is much to enjoy about this cosy and entertaining mystery and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Thanks to Pigeonhole and the author for the opportunity to read this book. Reading along with fellow readers is a bonus.

Detective Garda Cathy Connolly is investigating a break-in, but the discovery of bones concealed in the hem of a wedding dress changes everything. The owner of the wedding dress, Zoë Grant has been gifted the wedding dress by her grandmother who has said that the dress belongs to Zoë's mother who left Zoë when she was little. But, they never manage to question Lavinia Grant about the dress as she is found dead in her home in Dublin. Now Cathy Connolly has to find out the truth about the bones, could it be Zoë that hid them or someone else in her family?

Little Bones is a fascinating story about old sins and family secrets. I found the book engrossing from the start, thanks to both the interesting story and its characters. I instantly liked Cathy Connolly and her partner Dawson O´Rourke. They work well together, have great chemistry, which is a bit troublesome because Cathy has some personal problem in her life. And, I loved them together, despite Cathy's predicament.

Despite the slow progress of the case was I never bored with the story, I was fascinated with the finding of the bones. It was like a jigsaw with some bits of information being revealed now and then. Especially since it seems that a hunted murderer from the States and an old confused woman seems to have connections to the case and the Grant family.

I was hoping towards the end of the book that it would be the first book in a series, and I got my wish granted. At least I hope so since it ended with a hell of a cliffhanger. The one that makes you mentally sign and wonder when the next book is due.

It was a great book, with some unexpected twist and with an ending that first was promising and then turned devastating. I recommend this book warmly!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

When Brioni O’Brien agreed to help Cressida Howard find evidence that her husband was cheating on her, she had no idea what she was signing up to. Laurence Howard is the CEO of lifestyle conglomerate Ferryman, and if what Brioni has discovered is correct, he is also quite the ladies’ man as well as a deeply unscrupulous businessman. With blackmail, data selling, blackmail and possibly murder all coming to light, Cressida and Brioni have their hands full trying to untangle the web of lies and deception.

This is not the most revolutionary murder mystery/thriller of the decade. However, having said that, I found it to be a solid story, very compelling and surprisingly fun.
There are a surprising amount of threads which all come together quite nicely in the end. I started to get worried halfway through that it wouldn't all work and that there were just too many mini storylines, however I felt that by the end the story as a whole really did create one big picture.
I enjoyed the setting a fair amount, Laurence’s tangles work / social life was very interesting and the rural setting of Brioni’s cabin was lovely. The contrast of city and country add a nice element to the story.
I think that if you like quick thrillers, this is an enjoyable story. There are exciting elements, fun twists and interesting implications. Sam Blake has a good way of writing the world we know in a reasonably familiar way without being boring. Not my top read of the year (or month) but I did enjoy this, and would read more from Sam Blake in the future.
I would recommend this to those who enjoyed the Dark Room, fans of Megan Miranda and Kate Atkinson.

When Brioni O’Brien returns to Heathrow after time away travelling in Asia, she has not had the best of times. A traumatic experience has soured her trip and whilst waiting at the carousel, she realises that her suitcase has gone missing. Another concern is her sister Marissa. She has had no response to her messages to let her sister know she was coming home. Since Marissa’s marriage to American businessman Steve, their relationship had changed, but why would Marissa be ignoring her.

Set over three locations, London, New York and Ireland, High Pressure is a thrilling read with the main arc of the story being the aftermath of a bomb attack in London. Marissa’s bag has been found at the bomb site but where is Marissa? Brioni teams up with a visiting expert from Dublin, Professor Anna Lockharte, to try and discover what has happened to her sister.

A story involving New Scotland Yard and the American security services, Marissa’s disappearance is just one, albeit a fairly major, part of the puzzle. In addition to the investigation of the terror attacks and the numerous hoaxes intended to cause maximum disruption, there are other strands which add to the intrigue and tension – to say exactly what might be going into spoiler territory!

There are so many twists and turns and red herrings in the story, I veered from one suspect to another. At one stage I smugly thought it was obvious who was responsible for one particular crime but no, I had to later accept I had got it wrong.

It starts off a little slowly but the pace soon builds up and then the story has the speed of an express train. It’s part crime thriller but also a story about family and relationships – Anna has suffered a traumatic past and loss and Brioni is devastated by the thought that her sister that had been such a crucial part of her life could be gone.

I only had one minor niggle, and whilst it didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment, I thought the conclusion a little abrupt and I would have liked just a bit more character interaction towards the end on certain aspects. I believe that we may not have seen the end of Brioni so possibly my questions will be answered.

I don’t know why I haven’t read a Sam Blake book before but I certainly enjoyed this experience and this book won’t be my last. It had an exciting and well plotted story together with characters that you can engage with – Anna was a fabulous creation and with her cool head was great to have on your side in a crisis especially as she knew people in all the right places and Brioni was fearless when those she cared about were under threat. A recommended read.
