Om forfatteren

Growing up, Jill had wanted two things: a marriage like her parents'-strong, loving, and full of laughter-and a career. An early heartbreak had left her uncertain about love, until she met Joe. But as they grew closer, Jill faced difficult questions: How would politics shape her family and vis mere professional life? And was she ready to become a mother to Joe's two young sons? She soon found herself falling in love with her three "boys," learning to balance life as a mother, wife, educator, and political spouse. Through the challenges of public scrutiny, complicated family dynamics, and personal losses, she grew alongside her family, and she extended the family circle at every turn: with her students, military families, friends and staff at the White House, and more. This is the story of how Jill built a family-and a life-of her own. From the pranks she played to keep everyone laughing to the traditions she formed that would carry them through tragedy, hers is the spirited journey of a woman embracing many roles. Where the Light Enters is a candid, heartwarming glimpse into the creation of a beloved American family and the life of a woman at its center. Jill Biden is a community college professor and served as Second Lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017. During the Obama-Biden administration, she advocated for military families, community colleges, the fight against cancer, and the education of women and girls around the world. She continues this work today through the Biden Foundation, the Biden Cancer Initiative, and the Beau Biden Foundation for the Protection of Children. Dr. Biden is married to former vice president Joe Biden. vis mindre

This picture book was written by a stepmother of a deployed soldier. The author is also the Nana to two military children, who experienced the anxiety of the near instant separation of their father and the stress of worry about their father.. In her story, neighbors and friends are supportive. They shovel snow, and send pizza to help lighten the burden. This is not the experience for all of our military families. During
my two year recall beginning on 9/11 my family had no assistance. The author points out that only 1 percent of the population serve in the military. This rareness creates a disassociation between the civilian population and the hardships experienced by the military families within their community. The adage "Out of sight out of mind" is a common refrain that leaves military families isolated.in parts of the nation where active-duty bases are far and few. In recognition of this disparity the author offers resources to the Civilian Community on how to reach out to the children of military and support their families. Raul Colon support Jill's text with art that provides a window into the various emotion the children and mother experience throughout their father's deployment. Each image is not sharp, like a perfectly exposed photograph. Rather, the imagery is hazy as if to draw attention to the emotional whirl and stress time plays on the mind when flooded with emotions of separation and fear of the unknown. In contrast, Jill's words and lettering in the Resources section at the end of the book has Bolded titles and is enclosed in a double red line border, as if to say "BE BRAVE" Read and act to the community.

Overall, this book mostly felt very surface-level. The one exception was when the author discussed the loss of her son, Beau. She covers her early life, how she and Joe Biden met and began dating, the fact that she quickly became very close with his two sons and eventually became "mom" to them. She goes over the timeline of when she took time off of work to adjust to becoming a mother and then again when her daughter was born. She talks about hosting family dinners and about her work with military families. It feels like there's a lot unsaid.

The structure of the book felt haphazard - she jumped around in time quite a bit.

From the perspective of a mother, I could feel Dr Biden's pain over Beau. Told with grace and humor, Dr. Biden is someone I feel like I could be friends with. She loves her people fiercely and without apology, she has a sense of humor, and doesn't take herself too seriously.

I found this book charming, but pretty time relative. I do not know if as a child I had ever read biographies of past presidents while I do remember reading biographies of the current president. Pretty easy story to follow and vocabulary that is not too advanced. I would say that this would be good for middle grade elementary.
