I know what you're thinking. Starships + Aliens + Captain and First Officer main characters = Star Trek rip-off, right? I was thinking the same thing, even considering the captain's history as an accountant being nothing more than a footnote in the story...but I'm not afraid to admit that I was wrong. This is a true case of 'don't judge the book by it's cover', because the cover art is about the only negative thing I have for this one and if it makes the transition from e-book to print, I sincerely hope the cover is different.
War of the Soulites is a different type of sci-fi adventure. Captain Osirus was definitely an accountant before getting command of his own ship, and it's more than a footnote. He's short, a little pudgy, and starts out strictly as a by-the-book commander, but his first officer gives him some advice and he takes it to heart - "...start being the captain you should be."
Captain Osirus is a good man who happens to be working for some bad people, but he's loyal to his crew and knows how to get the job done when the going gets tough. I didn't expect to like him, and was surprised when I discovered he had become one of my favorite characters.
Marcus Collingway, the ship's first officer, was a mass-murdering "hero" of the Resistance during the war, and now he's fighting for those he had previously fought against. How this strange turn of events came to be is just one of the interesting plot developments in the story.
The Vigilant is basically a ship of losers; dead weight that the leading organization, NAVA, sees as expendable. Watching this group of outcasts slowly come together as a team when their lives are at stake was one of the highlights for me.
If you enjoy science fiction but grew tired of the same old stereotypes being put through the same old paces then you should treat yourself to War of the Soulites, because the unique characters and depth of plot definitely make this one a page-turner.… (mere)
