Om forfatteren

Ann Bausum beautifully brings back to life the story of one of the most celebrated dogs of the 20th century. Using painstaking research, she sifts facts from legend to revive Stubby's true story. By weaving the harrowing account of the Yankee Divisions service in World War I with the very human vis mere story of a man and his dog, Bausum puts you in the trenches and on the front lines. This compelling account reminds readers of the magic that can happen when a bond is formed between a human and a dog. vis mindre

Our library recently hosted a talk and extensive display about the life of Roy Chapman Andrews who grew up in nearby Beloit, Wisconsin. I missed the talk, but checked out this photobiography of Andrews. He was a fascinating man, possibly the inspiration for Indiana Jones. This book is a good introduction to his life and explorations, and includes many photographs from his expeditions.

Billed as a National Geographic Children's book, but I doubt that a child or even a pre-teen could read this book. I would find it quite boring if I didn't know anything about the Great War. That being said, Stubby was a real dog who actually, for some miraculous reason, traveled from Connecticut to the trenches in France and back again with his owner. He had his own gas mask and was given awards by President Harding and General Pershing. Stubby was hit by shrapnel but survived. Stubby was a faithful moral booster.… (mere)

This book is more important now than ever as our media has lost all creditability, they no longer investigate, they just parot what they hear, they take sides - this is not journalism!

FROM AMAZON: Hold the presses! Here's the sensational story of the birth of investigative journalism in America. At the turn of the 20th century, news reporters and monthly magazines collaborate to create a new kind of journalism—in-depth, serialized exposés of corporate, labor, and political corruption. Many of these stories become instant bestsellers in book format: books like The Jungle, Upton Sinclair's classic account of corruption in the meat-packing industry.

Ann Bausum's dramatic narrative follows a generation of dedicated journalists who force responsible changes in industry and politics as America thrives. Muckrakers is the inside story of public-spirited journalism right through its evolution, with profiles of latter-day practitioners like Woodward and Bernstein and today's Internet bloggers.

Ann Bausum's storytelling savvy will engage and inspire young people to cherish age-old values such as truth and public accountability. Muckrakers is the scoop on American journalism.
