Nick Bantock was born in England. He went to school in the soulless suburbs of North East London, and from there he moved on to art college in the market town of Maidstone, Kent. Two years later, he decided to try his hand at creating pop-up books, and the legend "Griffin and Sabine" was born.

I used to see this book around a lot as a kid but never read it somehow. It's good! Nice twists, and perfectly creepy.

This is Nick Bantock's autobiography of his creative life and development as an artist. The road was initially a bit rocky and early art instructors were not encouraging about his prospects. Thankfully, he persevered and did not give up on his dream and we now have his lovely books to sigh over. The Artful Dodger is full of his beautiful illustrations/collages with a bit on his idea development.

What an extraordinary book! This book absolutely transported me to another dimension and whisked me around the globe to exotic locales. It consumed me with a spine-tingling auro of mystique. The evocation of the classical muse was nothing short of brilliant. And the illustrations were outstanding. They were magical, abstract and so imaginative and colorful and a great fabric weaving together the drama of Griffin and Sabine. The use of physical letters (gorgeous unto themselves, also lavishly illustrated and brilliantly printed) was a wonderful added touch.

I was left feeling a little bit like someone stranded on a remote island somewhere, a bit devastated that I was no closer to resolution than when I started. But of course, that's how life works.

While this book is the second of a Griffin & Sabine series, it was perfectly enjoyable as a stand alone.

I highly recommend this beautiful, artistic and creative production.

I've been reading through the Sandman series by Neil Gaiman and needed a break from the darkness, so I picked this off the shelf and devoured it in about an hour. It has been many many years since I last read it, and it was exactly the tonic I needed to the darkness of Sandman.

The story is both fantastic and mysterious. The characters are pretty light, but the plot and the artistry within the pages is wonderful.
