It is a guide to the elements of scholarly writing for the advanced undergraduate, or the graduate student, arranged in a way that makes it easy to use either as a textbook or as a work of reference. It is designed to assist the native Anglophone who needs help in developing a fluid style of writing, and to help the non-native speaker develop such a style.

It contains sections warning of the pitfalls of over-reliance on the spell-checker and grammar-checker. It also contains useful sections on plagiarism. It also contains chapters on the different documentation styles a student or academic will encounter and use.
