Hard Measures is exciting from beginning to end. If you want to know what really happened with the CIA "torture" chambers, you need to read this book. The difference between this book and what the media says happened is amazing, personally, I think I'll believe the guy who was there.

Hard Measures is a vehicle case officer Jose Rodriguez, Jr uses to pull back a tiny corner of the veil which makes the Central Intelligence Agency's clandestine operations a surreptitious. A thirty-one-year officer, who scaled the ranks to lead various departments over his storied career (many of which likely cannot share), Mr. Rodriguez helped develop the counter terrorism department so instrumental in capturing many of the names now infamous because of relentless suicide missions around the globe.

For those hoping for a cloak-and-dagger non-fictional account of harrowing adventures, this book is likely to disappoint. It is a straight forward, explanation of the "inside baseball" trials and tribulations of secretive intelligence officers who become political fodder when the opportunity arises. Mr. Rodriguez deftly melds personal, Agency, and political histories to recount his passion for justice and virtue.

He employs this book for numerous goals: to regain some credibility to his names in relation to a political dust-up over destroyed interrogation tapes; to regain some credibility to the agency by illustrating the restraint and reluctance of field officers to use more advanced enhanced interrogation techniques; and, to reach a wider audience than those he speaks to at conferences in hopes of cultivating interest for new officers. He chose to declassify his identity (officially) to speak to those who may not think of themselves as what the CIA is looking for.

In the first chapter I began seeing a trend of several instance where he warned the reader he had to be vague due to classified information. While I appreciate officer safety and trade secrets, I grew concerned a large amount of the book would be too vague and become less interesting. During the chapter he discusses high-profile detainees at undisclosed (but now closed) "black sites," he seemed to share more than I expected. Despite the surplus of "I can't share that", they were never disruptive to the narrative and grew to be understandable. That is what should be expected to read such a timely book of an ongoing operation.

Again, for those Tom Clancy fans or Mitch Rapp enthusiasts, this book may be too dry for you. It has a heavy dose of politics. He spends almost half a chapter chronologically recounting the five or so years of back-and-forths seeking permission to destroy video tapes of "black site" interrogations. No Jason Bourne escapades through exotic locales are dramatized in Hard Measures.
