Imagine you find yourself the wife of a convicted murderer. Jenn tres to find someplace new for her family to make a new life for themselves. The author does an amazing job of creating a story that pulls you into the characters’ worlds, I loved getting to know Jenn, her twins and Chad along with the people in their new community.

I also appreciated how the author addressed Chad’s time in prison. The path the author selected for Chad ensured I stayed interested in the story. Moreover, the idea of a coffee and hot chocolate store helped bring the story to life. I also found myself caught up in the reactions of the people in the community. Truly, God provides the only thread capable of keeping this family together. So check out this book for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own

This is one of those stories that for me will have a lasting imprint on my life. I enjoyed the journey of Jenn and Chad as they struggled through a very difficult period in their marriage. The story explores pain, loneliness, anger and fractured lives when one is sent to prison. One of the hardest truths they faced was knowing that Chad was innocent. It made me think of all the men and women who are behind bars right now who are innocent.

I really was touched by Chad’s story and what he faced being in prison. It was hard to know that while his life was put on hold, his wife and children had to keep going. There were times he was angry that God wouldn’t answer his prayers. Oh he knew the Bible and what it said about forgiveness, but right now he was too angry to show grace to anyone. There is hope for him as someone is working on getting him released. Will he be able to hold on and trust God?

Jenn is having a hard time adjusting to being a single mom. Her husband is in prison for something he didn’t do. She has lots of emotions going on, but one thing she knew for certain was she loved her husband. Jenn never once doubted his innocence and worked closely with someone to help free him. The relationship between her children and her are strained most days. I liked how the author illustrated how the entire family was struggling with their new lives.

The beautiful story shows how one misstep can cause many people to suffer. I never thought what it might be like when someone is released from prison. They have to start over, reacquaint themselves with not only their family but the world. The part about the coffee shop was very inspiring and to me honored Chad and brought his dream to reality. The faith element is strong and weaves through each situation. The story taught me to not judge, learn to forgive and never give up hope. This story is the first on my list for best book for 2022.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Broken Together is a nicely written story by Brenda S. Anderson and Sarah S. Anderson. This writing style is so nice it is impossible to tell there are two authors. I like how they tackle a tough subject and provide readers with a powerful story. I appreciate the characters of Jennifer and Chad and how their love survived a long separation as well as how long and hard Jennifer fought for his name to be cleared and him to be released. I also appreciate how hard their two children helped to make the coffee and cocoa shop a reality. I liked how realistic this story is with showing the struggles each member of the family has long after the prisoner is released. I did have to chuckle over the tiny town where the murder took place having a coffee shop. With that being said I especially enjoyed the small parts of the story of going back to an area I visited in my childhood.
I voluntarily received a complimentary ARC copy of the story, this is my honest review.

3.5 Stars

I’ve got mixed feelings about this book and part of that might be because it hits on an area that I feel is a character flaw in myself—being self-sufficient and not asking for help when we need it.

All the characters in Pieces of Granite display this characteristic to varying degrees, and as they struggle through their circumstances, they lean only on themselves to get them through it. Not on family and not on God. Yep, been there, done that.

Brenda S. Anderson’s characters are flawed and human, which makes them extremely relatable as they wrestle with their issues.

It did take me a while to connect with these characters and I would have liked a little more information about caring for a baby with Down Syndrome, but at its core, this story is about family and the fragility of them when not build on a solid foundation.

Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
