Grand Opera: The Story of the Met af Charles Affron
A wonderful read; I have been going to the Met for 50 years, and have even seen a production on 39th street. This is a judicious and capable history and the latest master, Peter Gelb, gets an appropriate reaming. His budget has gone up 50% in the last 8 or 9 years, and the opera as we know it is probably dead. The book could have used sharper editing; blandish for brandish, for example.

Well research bio of film star Lillian Gish that contained a lot of information that I had not read before. I like the interviews with those who worked with her. The author did everyone a favor by not reciting long plot summaries of the films but at times provided too much personal opinion on the films. I would have liked more photographs.
