Kort biografi
Marguerite Abouet was born in 1971 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, in Western Africa. She grew up during a time of great prosperity in Côte d'Ivoire. At the age of twelve, she and her old brother went to stay with a great-uncle in Paris, where they further pursued their education. Years later, after becoming a novelist for young adults, Abouet was drawn to telling the story of the world she remembered from her youth. The result was the graphic novel Aya de Yopougon, published in North America as Aya, illustrated by Clemént Oubrerie, that recalls Abouet's Côte d'Ivoire childhood in the 1970s, and tells the humorous, engaging stories of her friends and family as they navigate a happy and prosperous time in that country's history.

Set in the Ivory Coast in the 1970s, the strength of this is the portrayal of normal, everyday life that we don't always see in African fiction. This is a bit of a soap opera and when it ended I wanted to know what happened next.

Disclaimer: *it's been a while since I've read this, but I saw the movie recently. Yes, go watch it!

I enjoyed this series a lot. I'm someone who enjoys overly dramatic soap operas, so this was a perfect fit for me. Things get very messy with pregnancy drama ("You're not the father"- Maury), affairs, and general dating life. There are blatant sexism and dusty men who can't keep their drawls on throughout the story as well as an emphasis on education.

Aya is focused and doesn't get into a lot of foolishness nor tolerate it. Despite her parents wanting to marry her off soon, she would rather study medicine. Even with all the drama in this series, we see how the lovable characters march through their days in a vibrant, colorful community.… (mere)

Representation: Black main character

7/10, a very hilarious graphic novel that's part of a series, can't wait to get more of them. For some reason, only the third book is in my library, they should get the other two books.

Lost interest in the storyline after 50 pages. Teenage growing up and true-love drama, set in middle-class Ivory Coast. Artwork is nice. Maybe I’ll try it again another time, but just not in the mood for it now.
