Bel Canto is one of my all time favorites! I would recommend it to anyone. ... a lot to Lucy's story.
Again, both books will rip your heart right out of your chest. Stunning.
eta: I also loved Bel Canto. If you haven't read it, you should check it out. If you like Ann Patchett I recommend her memoir Truth and Beauty; it is beautifully written book about her relationship with fellow writer and cancer victim Lucy Grealy; it is a powerful work on the limits of friendship. I haven't read Bel Canto, but it is on my list.
I, too, liked Life ... ... know once I have read it.
Up until recently I had not read any of Ann Patchett's books. Having now read both Run and Bel Canto I am definitely going to be on the lookout for her books in the future. I completely agree with you about Bel Canto and some of the prose she uses is lyrical ... ... though I have a funny feeling I read it when the hardcover came out last year, and sensational socks

I'd also like to see The History of Love by Nicole Krauss. (Woohoo, just looked it up and it's a 2009 possibility!) ... the voice of the narrator (which I actully didn't find very realistic), it lacked the language style I fell in love with in Bel Canto and I couldn't keep going with it. But I will try more books by Patchett when I can.

What a gorgeous novel. The language just sings - effortless and beautiful. Sheer poetry. I was a whole lot less concerned about the plot than the language, just sat back and let the words glide over me like silk. Bel Canto by Ann Patchett was just as "bel" the second time around
Reluctant Genius by Charlotte Gray ... Urban Centres is Reshaping the Nation by John Lorinc for my book club on public policy issues.
Just finished Bel Canto for the second time and loved it, again.
#163 ChocolateMuse: I read Bel Canto recently and loved it. I thought some of the passages, like the one you quoted, are pure poetry. From Bel Canto. Everyone has been held hostage for a long time now (not a spoiler, trust me) and Kato is playing the piano:

I really enjoyed this book. Normally I am not surprised what happens in a book, but this one surprised me. ... Ann Patchett is one of my favorite authors -- she delves deeply into emotion and I'm making my way through her entire list. Bel Canto is one of my favorite books of all time.
Let me look through my library re: inspirational books and books-to-film... ... in her opinion too much description.
She and I don't necessarily mesh though, when it comes to reading. She hated Bel Canto, for example, and I thought it was brilliant - though I did need to spend time thinking about it to come to that assessment.
I can't do depressing these days - ... ... Gregory - not sorry I read it, just not sure what the big deal is about it.
