I read After Dark last December and loved it. It was my first encounter with Murakami and I found his writing style fascinating. Hope you enjoy it. ... art & design section!!!) there are always some books whispering my name... ;-)
This time it was The use of weapons and After Dark.
I noted that since last visit to this particular shop they have installed reading zones, with easy chairs and tables.

The only Murakami I've read was After Dark, recommended by a friend and I really liked it. It was quite different--quirky--and reminded me of Virginia Woolf because of its unusual structure. Could you recommend which one of his I should try next? Is there one with a bird ... I own both After Dark and Kafka on the Shore, but I haven't yet read them. I started my Murakami love affair with Norwegian Wood, then fell completely in love with The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. After Dark was my first Murakami, and I read it last month. I thought it was great. I've got a few others of his at home in the TBR (Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, and After the Quake). So I'm still in the process of becoming a fan, but I'm definitely headed that ... hemlokgang:

This was an interesting read. A bit more thought-provoking than a couple of my other recent reads, for sure. He's an excellent storyteller, and I could feel myself exploring the world of the night right along with him.
I'm halfway to my goal of fifty books ... I'm still in the process of finishing After Dark, but as soon as I do, it's on to The Shadow of the Wind, which just arrived today. ... and that's probably all I could say about it. Didn't make that much of an impression on me honestly.

This was great. It's been a little while since I read Murakami and I'd forgotten how much I enjoy his sense of writing. Differ ... I just started After Dark by Haruki Murakami. I am so glad that I read this so soon after the other Murakami. It was so much shorter and easier to read. Very interesting story that moves through the night following Mari while she fills in the time so she doesn't have to sleep. I liked it. karen, I have both Norwegian wood and After Dark waiting in the current pile of library books to be read. I will take a break before I attempt either of them though. Just finished After Dark, can't say it's his best novel, I'd even call it a novella, it just had a feel of incompleteness and underdevelopment, however it was still very good, I felt all the Eri Asai descriptions of deep sleep were so David Lynchian, I could even see how he would stage this all ... "Like, say, an octopus."

... ... look at novels. I have yet to read everything by Murakami (far from it actually, only read this, South of the Border, and After Dark), for fear of finishing everything he's written. I do own copies of Hard-Boiled Wonderland, Norwegian Wood, and The Elephant Vanishes though. For what it's worth, Norwegian Wood and After Dark are my two least favorite Murakami novels by far--and I have read all of them, including Hear the Wind Sing and Pinball, 1973.
My favorite is Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, followed by The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and ... ... Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards

I can't even explain it but I feel like I really loved this one. Sparse, understated, a growing undercurrent of menace that (almost) never seems to go anywhere. Experiments in perspective. Totally unresolved.
