This is the story of Fanny, half English, half French, who goes to the new world with her godfather Oliver and his beautiful, strange wife, Rose, to take up residence in the village of Alamoth. This novel manages to tell a story of that time and place without romanticizing anyone. The Abenaki are who they are, and they do what they do when they attack and burn Alamoth. At the same time McCarry manages to make the reader understand someting of the way they viewed the world, and their relationship to the French.
There is so much good about this novel, I am always surprised and a little sad to realize how little it is known.
