A charming light romance, characteristic of Stevenson at her best. The later part shares some characters and settings with Celia's House. Tonia and Lou are sisters, growing up in Edinburgh in the 1930s. They are neglected by their parents, but they have each other. Tonia is diffident and awkward; when Lou marries, she is at a loose end. There is deprivation and unhappiness ahead, particularly when World War II begins. But she will win through. ( )
