A Christmas gift from my wife. A very interesting read thus far. I picked up Push by Sapphire at the library yesterday and finished it this morning. Great book!
I slogged through The Shack by Wm Paul Young earlier this month. I found the message in there very convoluted at times.
And I've read Tempted by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast the 6th ... ... cupboard plinth' but I did make sure I picked something I hadn't enjoyed for that job. Great comments! I read The Shack a few months ago because it was the selection of my book club. I was one of the few, of 25 members, who really could not relate at all to this book. Others loved it!

Wobbly uncertain writing, not sure of his point of view, and then a very clear Message: this book is going to be a Big Warm Hug for Jesus. I certainly don't ... OK, that list was way too long! I think that perhaps The Shack was the most controversial book on L.T. this year thus far. I kind of like that. So many differing opinions and so many differing reasons for those opinions.

That is one of the beauty's of LT, ie we get to share opinions and thoughts. I'm in the minority regarding The Shack. It is a book that I simply could not relate to.

But I assure you, The Shackosis is a sham! Realizing that this book is fiction, I enjoyed it heartily, loved the characterization of the Holy Trinity and did indeed have some aha moments. I ... The Shack was interesting. I think Young raises some interesting points and explains some things well but there were a couple of times when some of the ideas struck me as just strange (yes, stranger than meeting God in a shack). It will make you think so I think it's worth reading but at the ... Berly-boo, you notice Mark hasn't been around much all weekend...it's because he's been in the hospital being treated for "The Shack"osis, internal bleeding caused by overexposure to the ordure contained in that "book." ... of Labyrinth was how much I was looking forward to starting my next book, very similar to how I feel now as I finish up The Shack. Better luck next time friend! I think Donna828 describes well why some people really love The Shack and others, not so much. As an atheist, I'm a much harsher critic of books like this. I still search for meaning in life, I still look for what I can learn from others--whatever their beliefs--but I'm not so willing to look ... This may not be the place to get into a religious discussion, but I can give you some of my "thoughts" on The Shack, Mark. Many people's lives have been changed for the better by reading it -- and that's a good thing. Personally, I don't believe that we as humans were ever intended to underst ... Donna- I'm over 2/3rds of the way through The Shack and it's been a real slog. I am a believer in God but I am not very active religiously. The Shack update: I made it through the 1st 75 pages and I survived quite well thank you! No disorientation or eye-gouging! We'll have to see what tomorrow brings! ... it was a test to see who caught my mistake, but I think I am just eager to read Bridge of Sighs. It's a good thing that The Shack is a quick read. It would be hard to sustain that emotion very long. Thanks again, friend. ... you haven't read. I also have Bridge of Sighs sitting in my tbr. I also need to get to it. BTW, I knocked out 75 pages of The Shack and it's ok. I think I was playing it up a bit, since Richard was giving me a hard time! Yes, it does help knowing it's fiction. Mark - I haven't read The Shack nor do I have any desire to read it. I think Belva's point is a good one - far too many people have taken it way too seriously. Good luck with it though! I've started The Earth Hums in B F ... Re: The Shack. Belva's comments remind me of my role in the church group that was reading it. I had to continually bring them down to earth with my mantra: "This is FICTION." My theology comes from the Bible and prayer, not a book that I highly suspect was written for its commercial appeal. O ... ... because the title reminded me of Graham Greene's Travels With my Aunt, which is a novel? Who knows.

I can't tell you what you'll think about The Shack, of course. I've made my disdain plain, I think. I couldn't stand The Celestine Prophecies. I worked at the public library when I read it and I had to be polite to all of the people who raved about it.

And yes, a lot of controversy over The Shack on our good old LT. But that is good. Diversity works. If we all were and felt the same, what a boring old world this would be. But I do hope you enjoy or ... The Shack was recommended to me by a friend, and is now sitting beside me bed in my TBR pile. From what some of you say, I'm thinking it might be sitting there for quite awhile! ... dreams.
I'm not a huge fan of romances or chick lit, although I'll read them occasionally.

Am deep into The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and it is nothing like I thought it would be. I thought it would be a bit of comedic fluff. NOT. First and foremost, I read this book with an open mind and I also read it as a work of fiction. Secondly, in the book Jesus says that He is not a Christian, of course Jesus was not a Christian. ... ... so good and his books, to me, are timeless.
How is your reading of The Girl With the Dragoon Tatoo going? I finished The Shack just a bit ago and threw the review up. So I will be moving on to Fforde now. Hope you will be soon as well.

I have been collecting Iggulden's Attila stuff as it goes into paper. Just a word of warning though, he really butchered the actual history of Caesar in his first series. The Shack I am glad I read it. I agree that it is like The Celestine Prophecy in that each will take from it what they will. I thought CP was like Embraced by the Light by Betty J. Eadie. I felt that they were sort of kindergarten spirituality.

If Shack is in that category, I am in trouble! It's too late to plead illiteracy as an excuse. :-) Okay, now, ever'body...to be completely reasonable about this, books like The Shack (I shudder as I see the touchstone come up) or The Celestine Prophecy come into people's lives at the point they need to hear these concepts expressed or they inflict agonizing damage on the ocular units.

Now I'm really concerned. I had read about Shack when it first came out and had no trouble deciding "that's not for me," but a couple of weeks ago a dear friend who has been going through a series of life threatening medical crises for the past year gave me a copy of the book ... At the risk of being shot in places I'd rather not be, and then bleeding profusely...I loved The Shack. I thought the personifications of the Trinity were a hoot! Of course, I followed it up with Lamb, by Christopher Moore just to balance things out. Hard to fathom but I have spoken to more than one reader who found The Shack to be one of the pivotal books of their life.... reading it 3 and 4 times to mine its "depths."
AAARGH!!!! My inclination is to toss it into the same bin as Eat, Pray, Love, that whining, self-absorbed gruel of a ... ... the critics liked. Not that there haven't been critically-recommended clunkers (e.g., Amsterdam).

Interesting discussion, BTW, about the Prize winners. I do wonder sometimes when struggling to read the winners, if the judges bear the general public in mind at all. No problem. You aren't the only one who hated The Shack. We did it for a RL book group and one of our members hated it too. She didn't finish. I think its a polarizing book, people either love it or hate it.

I went out with friends today and realized when I got home that I left The Shack and Dead Until Dark in their car. ACK!! I'll be forced to start another book. That means that in addition to those two and The Stand, I'll be reading four books. *sigh* Well, if one must. :) Just finished The Shack. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone who's ready for some soul searching or in need of uplifting. The Divine Miss have be on to something rdear. I do have to say that I must have the same issue, though. The Shack, the dastardly Edgar, the Potato Peeling Cow book.. and some others do not usually make to to my TBR stack unless a good friend is kindly (?) trying to be nice and share with me . ... I may be the only person not to be pleased with The Shack. We have been on a Robert Morgan kick(Dh, daughter and I) He describes common emotions so well and explains past eras well. These books are mostly about Appalachia (sp?) and hard scrabble living. How about poundings--bringing a pound ... Pressured by friends to read the Shack, I just couldn`t finish it. I had never heard of The Shack or any of the other books mentioned but they all sound like stuff that I would want to read. I've finished Beckwood Brae now and am about to start The Shack. But am crook, too tired to concentrate and need to stay awake to get no. 1 son from school! Shall we add it to our Book Club reading list? Right along with THE SHACK and THE ALCHEMIST?
(Not recommended for some of our older members, who may not live long enough to finish it...) Flame away, but for me, The Shack was a clunker. I agree with Any Given Doomsday, The Continuity Girl & As Good as it Got are all up there as clunkers. The Shack by William Young Ooh I didn't have The Shack -- thanks. Guess you read Peace Child? I read that years and years ago, and the central conflict (the key that led to Eternity in their Hearts) comes to mind very often.

Life After God, Douglas Coupland ... I just finished The Glass Castle- a memoir and I am about 1/2 way through The Shack and have begun Out Stealing Horses #28. The Shack by William P. Young. This was a borrowed book but I'll be sure to buy one because it will be read again and again. ... House by Dickens and Remains of the Day by Ishiguro were my favorites this month.
At the other end of the specturm....The Shack by William Young which I horsewhipped myself through for my book club. #53 The Shack by William Young ... not what I expected in the sense that they ended rather abruptly! I liked some quite a bit and others not so much.
