Fiction. Literature. Short Stories. HTML:A stand alone edition of Annie Proulx's beloved story "Brokeback Mountain" (in the collection Close Range)â??the basis for the major motion picture directed by Ang Lee, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, "Brokeback Mountain" is her masterpiece.

Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they're working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer.

Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that's what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it.

The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of "Brokeback Mountain," and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world's violent intoleran

When someone asks what movie is as good as the book (novella), I will say this one. I saw the movie when it came out years ago but never read the story until now. To me, the story was the script, and how heart-wrenchingly poignant of a story it is ... a story of love from soul to soul and having to live with denial and loneliness because the world won't accept it. As Ennis states, “If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it.“ My heart just weeps. ( )

I have to say that I agree with the user who said this would've worked much better as a full length novel as opposed to such a short story. I wanted to know so much more about the characters and just felt rushed. ( )

I don't go to or watch movies so I had not preconceived notion about this story. And this story was wonderfully written with beautiful prose and a great pace. It sure packs in a punch for such a short story. ( )

Ennis del Mar wakes before five, wind rocking the trailer, hissing in around the aluminum door and window frames.

"I wish I knew how to quit you."
Dawn came glassy orange, stained from below by a gelantinous band of pale green. The sooty bulk of the mountain paled slowly until it was the same color as the smoke from Ennis's breakfast fire. The cold air sweetened, banded pebbles and crumbs of soil cast sudden pencil-long shadows and the rearing lodgepole pines below them massed in slabs of somber malachite.
