I felt that this manga had both some strong pluses along with a couple minuses itself. One of my biggest complaints is the timeline. Throughout the story from chapter to chapter we are bounced back and forth in time which means you’re spending the majority of the chapter trying to figure out if it is taking place before, during or after the beginning of the book. The other thing that bugged me, but is a commonplace complaint for me in reading manga is the similarity between the various characters. It makes it so hard to tell everyone apart.
The pluses are definitely led off by the cover. This has got to be one of the best covers I’ve ever seen on any book. The paper is thick and strong, the artwork on the cover is dreamlike and beautiful, not to mention totally different than the standard big-eyed look which seems to predominate most manga. The most unusual aspect is that the cover is glossy, off-white and has wrinkly edges all over it which makes it resemble an older manuscript paper in texture. Very unusual and very nice. The other thing I really enjoyed is the story itself. Despite the timeline issues I thought that story was interesting and compelling. Although I totally don’t understand why beings from another planet would be compelled to come and judge humanity, it is a rather tried and true sci-fi storyline. The characters, particularly the main two, all had distinctive personalities (if not looks) and I enjoyed reading about them.
Overall I feel that the pluses certainly outweighed the minuses and I am certainly interested in reading on with volume 2 in the future. ( )
