One last spin through my hardback cop before passing this series onwards to a new generation.. ( ) Picking up where the first book left off, Merlin is awaiting the birth of Arthur, whose upbringing he secretly expects to oversee until Arthur's real father, King Uther Pendragon, acknowledges him as his son and heir. The bulk of the narrative relates to Merlin's travels and Arthur's childhood in the household of Count Ector during this time, as well as the political machinations in the air. I never expected it would take two years to get to book two after reading The Crystal Cave in the fall of 2021, but here we are. The series so far has proven itself quite satisfying, handsomely-written classic Arthurian legend. Stewart's interpretation gives what feels like a well-rounded and cohesive version of the stories of which I was aware of only general bits and pieces previously. I shall endeavor to get to the third book in a more timely manner. The second book in the series has the same flaws as the first, only more so. Everything is justified by senseless prophecy. I remembered the events in this one even less than in the previous one. Of course, the destined heir, hidden away and being revealed in his youth, is an almost universal theme, going all the way back to the story of Cyrus the Persian emperor in Herodotus. This is a product of its times so content warning for some troubling attitudes about sexuality and women. That said, I loved this series when I first read it in high school and I'm still loving it as I revisit as an adult. I love how Stewart provides non-magical explanations for most of the legendary aspects of the story without completely eliminating Merlin's power. It makes for a world that feels simultaneously real and magical. HTML: The spellbinding, suspenseful story of how Merlin, the Enchanter, helped Arthur become the king of all Britainâ??a magnificent novel set in a time when no life is safe, no law stable Keeping watch over the young Arthur Pendragon, the prince and prophet Merlin Ambrosius is haunted by dreams of the magical sword Caliburn, which has been hidden for centuries. When Uther Pendragon is killed in battle, the time of destiny is at hand, and Arthur must claim the fabled sword to become the true High King of Britain. The prophetic voice of Merlin communicates not only the bristling atmosphere of the story's ancient setting but also its profound relevance to our own time. Once again, as she did in her bestselling The Crystal Cave, Mary Stewart provides a glowing re-creation of pre-Camelot England. No library descriptions found. |
