#17 2001 A Space Odyssey - Arthur C. Clarke

Booksloth in Book talk : Guess the book v3.0 (jun 10, 2008, 1:24pm)

I shouldn't butt in on my own clues, I know, but that sounds a lot like it could be 2001, a Space Odyssey to me. ETA touchstones

...grow a quiff ...underage drinking ...see Nirvana or Morphine play live ...watch 2001: A Space Odyssey without wishing the world had been more like that.

... I'll add it to my list anyway! I've read each of these books several times: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke Rendevous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke There are many others in my list, but most are not SF.

... books of (2) Jack Vance (Durdane and Tschai), (3) The Dune Serie Frank Herbert, (4) Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey), and (5) some of A.E. Van Vogt (World of Null-A).

... I think Neverwhere the book and Neverwhere the series sort of happened at the same time (sort of like what happened with 2001: A Space Odyssey and the movie. . .). There is little different between the two.

Cliff, My suggestion before watching Wings of Honneamise: Forget that 2001 was ever mentioned in the same breath. It's a pretty good bit of animation. Very pretty and doesn't rely on the action, violence and weird sexuality that so much Anime leans on like a crutch. But 2001 quality? Nah.

Wings of Honneamise, better than 2001? Never. It's not bad, but let's be realistic here. Hey, that one isn't available on DVD any more, is it? Did they rerelease it?

HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Because he's a computer, he has no feelings at all. You can't stop him. He's perfectly reasonable.

... Stand by Stephen King Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina by Kevin Anderson The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells The Early History of Rome by Livy Smith of Woo ...

... space stations, space walks, satellities and maybe human colonisation on other planets in the future. Don't I wish. 2001 is my favorite sci-fi book and one of my favorite movies, but it also makes me sad. Like it represents the future that should have been.

#85, rojse, "Blade Runner", "2001", "Brazil", "Gattaca", and "Children of Men" Had you never seen these before? Man, I envy you the big block of quality you are enjoying right now! Don't ask why I'm randomly picking this from the list above, but I would suggest you rent The City of Lo ...

My list: I agree with Cliff, 2001 is the current topper of sci-fi movies. If you can't sit through the movie, try reading the book first and then seeing the movie again. I dunno, it worked for me at least. Kubrick's Clockwork Orange is no slouch either. Alien and BladeRunner. I wish Ri ...

I've always wanted to see 2001 on the big screen. I am jealous!

But 2001 is only ever mentioned as the first book. For instance, you wouldn't call The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - The Lord of the Rings or the Narnia books The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - Narnia. My gut instinct is to agree with lorax, but I didn't want to overwrite ...

I was looking at 2001, 2010, 2061 and 3001. They have been linked together by the first book title 2001, but my understanding is that the series is actually called Space Odyssey (he was working with Stephen Baxter on a companion series, Time Odyssey). I don't want to create a new ...

... Monsters the movie about rocks that attack? The opening scene should be a recreation of the 'Dawn of Man' sequence from 2001 that ends with the monolith toppling on the cavemen, killing them.

I'm alone in space, my crewmates killed by a psychotic artificial intelligence, approaching Saturn in Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Cliff, no implausibilities were needed to spoil Sunshine for me. Just changing it from a 2001-ish "ain't space exploration tough" movie to a slasher flick killed it for me.

... looking to increase my TBR pile. I was wondering about your Top 3 wishlist books for books to be bought. Here's mine: 2001 Ultimate Hitchhiker's guide 1984 I'm curious about yours, let me know..

... 10 books? Well, that would be pretty subjective, no? I would say (though this isn't necessarily 'in order'): 2001: A Space Odyssey 2010: Odyssey Two 2061: Odyssey Three Childhood's End Rendezvous With Rama A Fall of Moondust The Fountains of Paradise Imperial Ea ...

He was perhaps the only one of the Grand Old Men of sf whose early works have barely aged. 2001, Childhood's End, The City and the Stars, Rendezvous with Rama, A Fall of Moondust, short fiction such as 'The Star', 'The Nine Billion Names of God'... all these are still good reads today. ...

... Arthur C. Clarke dies In many ways I think he had more impact on me than any other author. I originally read 2001 in my formative early teens. That was my introduction to 'hard' sci-fi. What I remember really impressing me about that book was that as mind-boggling as the story ...

What an interesting thread. I always wonder about people's usernames. My name is from 2001: A Space Odyssey -- Moon-watcher is the smartest of the group of apes in the beginning of the book. I never read it in its entirety, but the first chapter was printed in my high school mythology textbook. ...

I read 2001 (for the first time) when I was 15 or so, true. But I have reread it since then. Childhood's End I was mid-twenties. Caves of Steel early twenties. I can see what you are saying, but my wife first read 2001 last year and she liked it quite a bit. I hadn't read Foundation ...

I dunno. 2001 was one of the first sci-fi books I read. I think Arthur C. Clarke is a master of explaining hard sci-fi concepts in a simple fashion. Plus, since the book is so old, it explains a lot of things that your average sci-fi reader takes for granted. I also think Childhood's End, ...

I'm not too sure about 2001. I can't say why, but it just doesn't strike me as a very good introductory book from what I remember. Dune might also be a bit heavy for an introduction, but is definitely worthwhile. I suppose it depends on what they do like to read. For example, ...

I got the following from the library book sale: The Shining by Stephen King 2001: A Space Odessey by Arthur C. Clarke In the Dark of the Night by John Saul (wrong touchstone) and a collection of Edgar Allen Poe stories

Still reading Everything She Ever Wanted but I picked up 2001: A Space Odessey and The Shining at the library for $.50 to add to my 1001 Books TBR pile. I also picked up a John Saul book as well as an Edgar Allen Poe short story collection that has some good stories in it and some ...

Stephen Baxter's Titan (and Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 for that matter) makes me mad at how far behind we are in the manned space program. (Baxter's Voyage will probably do the same thing once I read it.) We should be so much farther along. Baxter's affection for the space program is ...

I suppose I'd know it if I saw it. I consider books such as I, Robot, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Mission of Gravity to be "classic" science fiction. Many instances of classic science fiction include these themes: -alien(s) -spaceship(s) -artificial intelligence(s) (and often two or all ...

I suppose I ought to, but watching the hugely overrated film version does not tempt me to re-attempt the book. 2001: A Space Odyssey is a little weird in that the book was written concurrently WITH the movie. My first question is *why* 1984 doesn't come up on search. Does it require at least one Alpha character? 2001 also gets nothing, but '2001 a' gets lots? I'd say that needs fixed. Anyway, the reason you have different numbers is that LT can't always tell that two books are really the same. Th ...

I think the reason 2001 isn't on the list is because the movie is so well known. I don't put much faith in a list that calls Anne Rice, Terry Brooks and even Tolkien "Science-fiction". Their books have NOTHING to do with science, and are in FACT "Fantasy".

Um, I noticed that Clark's 2001 isn't on the list. It might not be the very best he ever wrote, but I think it's an important science fiction novel, along with Stranger in a Strange Land (which I reread a year or so ago and found much too dated to enjoy as I had the first time when I was in my ...

With th exception of 2001: A Space Odyssey which was basically written from the movie, I'd say, quite possibly the best movie made from a book would be 1984. I'm old enough that I remember having my father take me to see 2001 in the theater (as a reward for passing some test) and waiting eagerly for the last two of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain novels to come out. I wonder if anyone else here is old enough to remember the 'Space Cat' novels, as that ...
