A book that spoke to me was Ishmael by Daniel Quinn ... love all of Kingsolver's other books; this one just didn't do it for me. I'm hoping a second read will change my view.
My Ishmael and Ishmael are two of my alltime favorites; I've spotted this copy for the last few months and finally decided I needed to have it on my bookshelf. I plan to ... I liberated lots of good stuff from Goodwill:

I read Ishmael and I am in the miffle of The Story of B. Does anyone out there want to talk about Daniel Quinn's philosophy? I always thought My Ishmael was a little choppy, like the two halves belonged to two different books. Story of B is my favorite of them, by far. Have you read his new(ish) book, If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways? Good on ya' fyrefly! Yup, Ishmael is one of the best books ever for me; have you read My Ishmael? Every bit as good, imo.
fyrefly, say more about the Quinn book please! I have it on my shelf. His Ishmael and My Ishmael are two of my alltime favorites. Not SF, but the two that come to mind are Ishmael by Daniel Quinn and Pride and Prejudice. I think I'm about to swear off Austen all together, actually. I read Emma a couple years ago and wasn't that into it, and P&P....hot damn did I dislike that book. :) ... to pick The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. Runner-up: Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I also love Owen Meaney, it ranks up there close to the top; and it's time to read To Kill a Mockingbird again, it's been many years but I loved it every time ... Ishmael by Daniel Quinn followed a decade or so later by My Ishmael by the same author. Thought provoking books about our place in the world, sustainability (before it was a buzz word) and spirituality.
And anything by Derrick Jensen. ... library. A quick note on why the text is important would be helpful, too.
