I'm reading The Satanic Verses and I am loving it so far. I think this willl end up being my favorite book by Rushdie. I love the depiction of the prophet and the ideas about god, and of course his engaging writing style. It's not Ring or Satanic Verses, but you're in the ballpark with the Middle East. ... about the middle east or India or Islam but for the life of me I can't think of the title.
So I am going to guess at The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. ... although I was underwhelmed by Oliver Twist and Kim. Ran into a few "interesting" reads: Against Nature, Demian and The Satanic Verses that kept me bemused if not necessarily amused.
Perhaps I just wasn't in the right mood last month.

I recall an incident where my brother's ex-girlfriend got peeved at me because I had a copy of Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses in clear view. I did not understand that she was Persian in heritage, she seemed like the last person who would be conservative about controversial ideas, ... Finished The Road 03/01/08. I got the same problem when reading The Satanic Verses. I like a good book, but some of them are so good you simply can't read them all in one sitting it appears. One of the main characters in indeed female, but not Muslim. I love this book, but I don't think it's quite what you're looking for. The only one of Rushdi ... ... Ground Beneath Her Feet, the main female character becomes a wild, western rock star. You may want to try the infamous Satanic Verses, but I haven't read it myself so I don't know if there are any main female characters.

I've been thinking of throwing Absalom, Absalom into the mix because I enjoyed the ... ... ships, so I was permanently lost during the 'suspenseful' ship chase.
My own personal hate was Salmon Rushdie's Satanic Verses. I found it unreadable and pretentious.
