Nicole Smith's Art (april 1 kl. 19:00)
Nicole Smith.
For artist Nicole Smith, color is the reason and color is what’s on the gallery walls at White Mountain Library until the end of March. The exhibit moves to Sweetwater County Library in April. Her artist statement is titled “Nicole Smith Plays with Color and Art”. She says, “I enjoyed learning ... (mere)and later incorporating the different color harmonies, color blending and a great understanding of color. I started to understand how to push color and exaggerate it. And how to completely ignore the color that was present and use whatever color I chose and make it believable.” The eighteen pieces in the exhibit represent a variety of media including oil on canvas, ink on paper, watercolor on hot press, acrylic on canvas, watercolor on cold press. Smith says there is whatever meaning you want to put into the works. She created them as fun pieces that she hopes delight and brings a smile to people. She believes that art is often “over analyzed”. She created these because I liked the process of creating and the challenges of making a painting work.” Smith briefly describes the paintings in the exhibit in a separate handout. About “Spineless” she says, “I really enjoy breaking up an image. I like the hard lines of the box edges that contrast the softness of the images. The title was picked because it was supposed to feature three spineless things, a flower, a bug and a squid. But I got the flower done and it looked too pretty to put a squid with so I chickened out and went with all flowers but kept the name.” About another painting titled “1927” she says, “This is one of my personal favorites for sentimental reasons. My father will not part with his 1927 Model T which he and I rebuilt from scratch and I will not part with my painting.” The painting is a triptych, three separate paintings of one image. In contrast to her large, dramatic oil on canvas paintings on the East wall of the gallery, Smith has included watercolors and ink paintings on the South wall. “Red Lily” is a blend of tiny little colors which remind the viewer of 19th century French painter Georges Pierre Seurat. She says Seurat was not really her inspiration. She was trying to figure out a way to “blend my pen colors, first experimenting with what I could do with pens, then pushing the colors forward.” Another painting is titled “”Wicked Sick Fuzzy Death” which she says is not meant to be so dark, deadly or serious. She picked the images for their colors and nothing more. It is also the reason for such a silly name. Smith is a Green River native and “will always be a Wyoming girl”. She graduated from Green River High School with a strong background and interest in art. From there she earned her Associates of Art degree with an emphasis in art from Northwest College in Powell. After two years she transferred to the University of Wyoming to complete a degree in history. She spent another year at UW and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2005. Her years at UW encouraged her to experiment more and work independently which came in handy when she spent her last semester in Hull, England. She spent a lot of time traveling around Europe and acquired great inspiration from that experience. She returned to the States with a new degree and without employment. She moved to Portland, Oregon to seek her fortunes. She’s currently employed as a drafter for a Geo-tech company there. A program accompanies the exhibit along with a description of the art.

Small Quilt Exhibit (maj 1 kl. 19:00)
Quilters are invited to apply for the Small Quilt Exhibit to show at the Sweetwater County Library during May and June. The Small Quilt Exhibit is a group show, a collaboration of quilters showing their handiwork. Applications with guidelines are available at the libraries and the Community Fine Arts ... (mere)Center. Applications can also be found at the Golden Hour Senior Center, and Green River businesses A Little Country Character and Keama’s Quilts. The deadline for applications is April 15th. The show is sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library System http://sweetwaterlibraries.com and coordinated by the Library System’s Exhibits Committee. The limit is two pieces per person and hanging quilts should be no larger than 48” x 56”. Eligible pieces for the group show include wall hangings, crib blankets, placemats, that meet the size guidelines. Each quilt is to be labeled with the quilter’s name and a brief description of the quilted piece such as the quilt pattern or if it is original. The locked glass case in the lobby can display items such as vests, quilted handbags, small pillows, and toys. Pieces should be brought to the library on April 30th and picked up on July 1st. The Exhibits Committee is made up of community members Jill Hartley, and Marylu Schock of Rock Springs; Angie Bennett, Deon Quitberg and Donna Ragsdale of Green River and library system members Boyd Broughton, Library Director; Debora Soule, Director of the Community Fine Arts Center; Julie Farr, Head Librarian at White Mountain Library; Carla Hardy, Head Librarian at Sweetwater County Library; and Vicki Roth, Public Relations and Programming. Sit and Stitch (maj 31 kl. 19:00)
none.
Tammy Palmer, Green River resident and novice knitter, is asking people to “sit ‘n stitch” with her on Monday’s from 10-12 at the Sweetwater County Library. She said it’s a way to get people together to knit or crochet and learn from one another. She approached Carla Hardy, Head Librarian, ... (mere)to see if she could use the room for the needle arts, sewing, and crafts projects. Hardy approved using the room for “sit ’n stitch, and Palmer has brought her latest knitting project to work on at the library for the past couple of weeks. Palmer is a self-taught knitter which began when she decided she wanted to learn how to knit socks. She said it took her eight months to knit her first pair of socks learning as she went by reading instructions and using the Internet. Instead of sitting at home knitting, she thought it would be more fun to work on projects with other people and learn from them. Palmer and Hardy say participants should bring their own project, supplies and tools to the library. Small children are welcome but must remain in the meeting room with the adult. For more information, contact Hardy at 875-3615, ext. 1410 or Palmer at 875-6034.

One Book, One county (maj 31 kl. 19:00)
Varios læser fra The Kite Runner.
One Book, One County is underway in Sweetwater County and copies of the selected book “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini are circulating at libraries and throughout the community. Published in 2003, “The Kite Runner” is a novel with wide appeal set in Afghanistan in the mid-1970’s, during ... (mere)the final days of the monarchy to present day. The committee coordinating the event has scheduled several opportunities to discuss the novel. Coming events include showing the movie based on the book, book discussions, and programs about the Middle East. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is listed on the Sweetwater County Library System’s web site, http://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com under the One Book, One County logo. A blog is also available on the web page to discuss aspects of the novel. The first program takes place at White Mountain Library on April 8th at 7 p.m. It is titled “Democracy and Religion in the Middle East” presented by Seth Ward, a humanities scholar. The program is sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library System with funding from the Wyoming Humanities Council. Book discussions are scheduled at five locations during April. The Young at Heart Senior Center is the site of a discussion on April 8th at 12:30 p.m. Also on April 8th Marcia Hensley will lead a discussion at Mitch’s Café in Farson beginning at 7 p.m. The discussion at the Sweetwater County Library will take place April 10th at 7:00 p.m. Rock Springs Library is the site of the April 14th discussion at 6:00 p.m. The final book discussion is on April 23rd in the Hay Library of Western Wyoming Community College led by Rick Kempa, Associate Professor of English at the college. Two showings of the movie “The Kite Runner” are scheduled at the libraries during April. On Friday night April 18th the movie will show at White Mountain Library beginning at 6:00. Following the movie, two University of Wyoming professors will lead a discussion of the movie and the book. Paul Flesher teaches religious studies and Robert Torry teaches in the English Department at the University. Together they wrote “Film and Religion: An Introduction”, a new college textbook. The movie will show in Green River the following Friday on April 25th at 6:00. Prior to the movies, both locations will serve pizza and popcorn beginning at 5:30. All programs are free and open to the public. Other activities in conjunction with “The Kite Runner” are planned later in April with details to follow. “The Kite Runner” is the story of a young Afghan boy Amir who is best friends with Hassan, son of his father’s long-time servant Ali. They are inseparable until Amir’s jealousy over his father’s attention to Hassan and guilt over an incident he witnesses drives Amir to betray his friend. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Amir and his father flee to California but Amir cannot escape his past and the guilt. Two decades later he returns to his homeland to redeem himself and finds out devastating news that puts his childhood in perspective. “The Kite Runner” is the story of friendship, betrayal, and redemption and the relationship between fathers and sons. The setting of the novel in Afghanistan, along with the United States’ involvement in the Middle East and the possibilities for understanding a different culture appealed to the committee. The concept of One Book, One County as a county-wide book club is that people read one title during the same time period and talk about the book with others in public venues or private conversations. A couple of sites available on the Library System’s web page go into detail about “The Kite Runner”. NoveList, a reader’s advisory, is found under “databases” on the index page at http://www.sweetwaterlibraries.com. The site has a biography of the author, a summary of the plot and discussion questions for groups that hold their own book discussions. There are also links to other related sites including author Hosseini’s site with news and reviews. The WYLD CAT, the Wyoming Libraries Database, also has a summary and reviews of the book. One Book, One County is sponsored by the Sweetwater County Library Foundation, the Sweetwater County Library System, and Western Wyoming Community College, with support from the Rock Springs Area Community Foundation and Louise Wesswick. Matt and Renee Bush donated $900 to purchase 100 copies of the “The Kite Runner”. One Book, One County activities are coordinated by the Sweetwater County Library System. The collaborative committee is represented by librarians, teachers, Western Wyoming Community College and interested partners. Members are Boyd Broughton, Carol Brown, Leslie Davies, Julie Farr, Janice Grover-Roosa, Jon Harwood, Marcia Hensley, Paul Holland, Dave Kathka, and Vicki Roth.
