155: I agree - while the content is inappropriate (highly in this thread's case), and devalues the wonderful sentiments of the preceding posts (to which I add my own best wishes) it is not an abuse of the site's TOS.

Perhaps a personal message to the poster would have been better...it is, after all, from a very young, fairly new, but seemingly bona fide (depending on age) member.

Hello my friends, thank you so much for the warmth, love and prayers in this thread. I knew you were all with me in a special way because that's just the way you are, but when I saw a fuzzy green dragon in the hospital gift shop display window, well, it felt like a hug from you all. :) Now every time I walk by it I will think of this thread of incredible support.

Tommy is having a difficult night tonight. They are trying to prepare him for tomorrow when, hopefully, they will remove the ventilator from his throat. Three things have to be right though, so it might not happen. It is incredibly difficult to leave him behind and come to the motel.

Tommy was a passenger in a car. I won't even describe the details to you, because the driver did something incredibly stupid and will have to live with that decision for the rest of his life. Nuff said.

Two of my son's vertibrae were broken, and the ligament which held them together was severed. His surgery was to fuse those vertibrae together since he had no ligament support. So far, the doctor is pleased. Tommy also had brain damage, they call it brain shearing, along with hematomas. The car rolled multiple times, it was small and my son's head was touching the roof when he sat in it. From what we can tell, he still has his memory and brain function, as well as movement of his limbs. I can call this nothing but a miracle. That my son is alive is incredible. The kids were in the car for 45 minutes before one of them woke up and was able to call for help. I have heard that the car was in multiple pieces and getting Tommy out took another 45 minutes. He was airlifted to the hospital. The other kids had various injuries, none as severe as Tommy's, but they are all alive as well.

We have a long and arduous road ahead of us, health, healing, emotionally and financially, but every day I will know that my son who could have been gone has been given back to me.

MrsLee - you have so many more important things to do right now it's incredibly touching that you would take the time out to write to us. Thank you. The accident sounds horrendous and it is only on reading your message that it becomes clear how very lucky Tommy actually is. I hope you realise how many hearts are with you here on LT and that you and Tommy - and the families of the others involved - can take some strength from that. I'll be wishing for that ventilator to go today but better a few extra days than moving too fast at this stage so the important thing is that the professionals are happy with his progress, however fast or slow.

nov 11, 2009, 5:39am (top )Message 166: MrAndrew

MrsLee - thank you for taking the time to fill us in with the details of Tommy's situation. I understand, personally, the issue you refer to (brain shearing) as my oldest sister suffered that in a car accident about 10 years ago. I know you and your family will provide all the love, support, and emotional comfort (this last is so important!) to Tommy that you can, and this will certainly be a strong factor in his favor. As so many have said, you will be in the thoughts, prayers, and best wishes of the folks here in the Dragon. We certainly understand your visits here might be few and far between for some time, but we'll always be leaving the light on for you.

((((((MrsLee & Tommy))))) The accident sounds terrible and you sound very forgiving when you talk about the driver of the car, which I am sure has earned you and Tommy a little good karma to help with his recovery. It's amazing what a positive attitude can do. We are all thinking of you and him and the rest of your family and hoping that the path ahead is not too rocky while he recovers. Thank you for giving us such a detailed update.

Thankyou for the update. I told my children about Tommy today. With two older teens (19 & 17) out on the roads daily and a younger teen (14) finishing his drivers ed class today it felt necessary for them to see how dangerous a momentary bad judgement can be.

nov 13, 2009, 2:12am (top )Message 211: MrsLee

Thank you dear ones for your encouragement. Tommy is out of the ICU and his struggles now will be to regain total movement and coordination in his limbs. The Drs. seem to think it is just a matter of time.

Imager - I'm sorry that brought back memories, but thank you for sharing your encouraging thoughts with me. It kills me to leave him alone at night, but he told me with a sigh tonight that he thought he could sleep on his own. :) Of course I had to interigate the nurses as to how they would know if he needed them. I'm sure they just love me.

My beloved came back from a walk today carrying my green dragon from the gift shop! I'll share a picture someday, maybe with my boy holding it. :) We have some hard work ahead of us, thank you so much for all the love here.

When you consider the seriousness of the accident it sounds as if Tommy is making remarkable progress. Thank you for yet another update. MrsL. And don't worry about what the staff think of you; I'm sure they would much rather know you are fighting for your son than otherwise. They are human, after all, and probably know they would be just the same in your position.

Mrs Lee, having Tommy leave ICU is a wonderful milestone and it's so good to hear that he is making great progress. I'll bet he's already the nurses' star patient and they would have appreciated all the assistance you have given by being there so I'm sure they'll be taking very good care of Tommy.

I think there's some healing power in those dragons because I bought one (couldn't get green, had to make do with blue, but he is cute) to watch over my husband in hospital this year.

Tommy, coppers (big hug to you) and I will probably always have to live with those awful memories but it's true that the experience made me aware of how important it is to make the most of every day I share with my family and friends, and you have some great friends here at the Green Dragon.

nov 14, 2009, 10:16pm (top )Message 227: MrsLee

A little update. The nurses are letting me stay in the room with him because he gets disoriented and agitated. I think it helps to have me there, but it's hard on my husband and I. Different sleeping and eating hours. In a way I'm more lonely because we are taking shifts. I won't be online as often either, just no time.

A positive note, Tommy was walking today! It wore him out. He also sat in a chair to eat and managed to do some other personal things as well. And, he got pants! Hospital pant, I grant you, but to a 19 year old boy, that means a lot. He is getting more ornery, but I told the nurses that is more natural.

I don't know how to convey thanks for all the great comments above, they mean the world to me!

That's great news Mrs Lee! Keep up the good progress Tommy :)

nov 19, 2009, 2:25am (top )Message 256: MrsLee

My head is spinning a bit. Tommy has been transfered to the Rehab part of the hospital. He may be released by the weekend! I am having trouble figuring out who and where I am. Two weeks ago was the most terrifying day of my life, and now I may be taking my boy home in a couple of days. I can't express how blessed I feel right now. And very, very tired. And so excited.

It doesn't look like there will be any permanent damage aside from the bolts and bits of titanium in his neck and perhaps a bit of limited movement there. Right now his biggest worry is whether or not he will be able to ride rollercoasters, and the fact that his therapist told him no more headers in soccer. Surreal.

On the spiritual side, he is very aware that his life is a gift and he is eager to find out how best to use that gift and share it with others. Every fact we learn about this accident seems to confirm that it is a miracle any of the kids survived.

Tommy had his stitches out today and is really hoping for a shower tomorrow. He wants a shower so bad that he even forgot to ask the Dr. about getting his cell phone back! This is the first night he will be alone at the hospital since his bad night, so I hope it goes well. He insisted that I stay with Mark tonight and tomorrow because it's our Anniversary. 26 years. Probably the worst and the best of them all.

Thank you again everyone for walking this journey with me.

nov 19, 2009, 3:12am (top )Message 257: Shanra

MrsLee, that is wonderful news about Tommy! I hope he'll indeed be released by the weekend!

(And that's so sweet of him to insist you spend your anniversary together.)

nov 19, 2009, 3:38am (top )Message 258: Booksloth

When your biggest worries become rollercoasters and football headers you know things have just improved hugely. That is amazing news and there are going to be some very big smiles around LT this morning. (Not the same thing, I know, but I have a number of titanium screws and corresponding metalwork in my back and I'm rarely even aware they're there - and that's only just over 2 months after the surgery that put them there - so I hope and predict a rapid recovery.)

I'm finding it difficult to type through the tears in my eyes...
Such good news!

Happy anniversary too - truly you both can celebrate this one after being given a very special gift from whomever is watching over Tommy. Karma says you deserve it - have you thought of that?

nov 19, 2009, 6:32am (top )Message 260: Emily1

I teared up reading the news. From the bottom of my heart, MrsLee, I'm *so* glad that things are moving forward so well for Tommy. Which is not to say that we won't keep you in our hearts going forward.

To paraphrase clam in the original post on this thread, if you pray, go say thank you. If you send positive thoughts, just bank the positivity you feel from knowing the kid is getting better!

nov 23, 2009, 12:22am (top )Message 295: MrsLee

We are home! I thought I would post a picture of the wonderful boy you have all been thinking of and praying for, he truly appreciates you all, as do I. :D

He is holding my new dragon (he got a HUGE teddy bear). The "red eye" function almost got rid of the nasty hematoma in his left eye, he would be so disappointed, he's rather proud of that and his stitches on the right side of his forehead. They don't show much in this photo, but I told Tommy that they look a bit like a tiger attacked him. I think they will not be very noticeable when they are healed though.

Tommy and his brother and sister are in the livingroom watching the Star Trek movie which came out this year. Think I'll go join them. I do look forward to getting back in the pub on a regular basis though. Love you all!

nov 23, 2009, 12:45am (top )Message 296: MerryMary
