Om mig I am the founder and lead developer of LibraryThing.

Om mit bibliotek My interests run to ancient history, Greek and Latin. So far I've done maybe 1/4-1/3 of what I have. Frankly, it's also gotten a bit mixed-up and redundant, as I use this account for testing. (There are a couple books I test out with, because I know they have certain fields or are in certain libraries.) That said, I've got a good chunk of my history, religion and archaeology in. Greek, Latin and novels to come....

Hi,

I see you are giving a talk at Wikimania 2008. If you are not already planning to, could you perhaps talk about the possibilities of collaborative resource sharing specifically for Wikipedia, the use of groups such as http://www.librarything.com/groups/engli... to catalog all the books that Wikipedia editors have access to to use for resources?

Hello Tim,

I like most of the changes you've done with this app. But, in the process, a couple of thousand of my tags have vanished. Do you know of an easy/fast way to get them back, or should I begin to input them again?

John
By now or very shortly LT will have passed the 444,333 member mark, replacing Cleveland, Ohio, as the 40th largest community in the United States. I predict we will be in the top 30 by the end of the year (#30 now is Oklahoma City with 537,734 people.
hi, Tim, thanks for the message; actually, I don't recall any special slowness yesterday...
Thanks, Tim.

Norman
Hello, once more, Tim ...

Thanks for your rapid response.

The reason I inquired is that there is no "Your Home" on your site. Is that because you are one of the administrators?

Thanks, in advance,

Norman
Hello, again, Tim ...

Perhaps I wasn't very clear in my previous message.

I am NOT speaking of the tabs at the top of the screen which, on your Home page, are:

Home
Profile
Your Library
Tags
Add Books
etc.

I am speaking of the next line which, on your Home Page, are:

Profile
Recommendations
Reviews
Statistics
Clouds
Gallery
Find Friends
Blog Widgets

On my Home page, the second line starts with "Your Home" which I wish to delete since I already have the tab "Home" on the line above it.

How may I accomplish that?

I also wish to delete "Connections," as well.

Thanks, in advance,

Norman
Tim ...

I like what you've done to your new look.

How can I delete the "Your Home" on the second line of my new Home page?

Thanks, in advance,

Norman
Dear Tim,

Thanks for inventing this site. It's changed my life!
Tim,

The ROV scanner is a portable scanner that stores a lot of barcodes, and then dumps them in a bundle. My problem was mostly with the way it interacted at the USB level with my Mac, and I expect to resolve it in the next couple of days with a software solution. While using it via the serial cable on a work laptop, things went really well here on LibraryThing. I have a CueCat myself, although probably a pretty old one. (Then again, maybe they're all old now?) In any event, thanks very much for the offer. I hope to start using LibraryThing seriously over the next weeks, while finally unpacking my library. Extremely cool service you have, and apparently good service that you provide as well.
Hi Tim,

I saw that someone from LT is going to ALA, and it made me wonder: have you ever considered going to the World Science Fiction Convention? It seems that LT is fairly popular among SF readers. It's probably too late for this year (Denver in August) but who knows?

Just a thought....
Just curious, but do you have/read Colleen McCullough?
TIM!
There is a member who is posting very inappropriate messages in multiple groups. Her name is shrek33333. Here is what she posted (they're all the same, but in different groups): http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph... and http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph... and http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...

Please do something! She is going to a lot of groups and posting this.
Yalichev is ok, but I must have read it the best part of ten years ago, so I wouldn't give huge weight to that 3-star rating. It spans the early Egyptian era through to the late Roman Republic. Significantly (at least for me) he fails the "what is a mercenary?" test I set all books about mercenaries, and I found his characterisation of the late Roman Republic's military as moving from Militia to Mercernary as questionable, if not bizzare. More of a survey work I'd say, probably worth a revisit from me, and a library check-out from you.
On the plus side it's the book that got me back into Xenophon (We didn't do The Anabasis in University), so it can't be all bad!
You are too kind, thank you so much!

I edited both my profile and my daughters. Hopefully it is completely clear that I am the person behind the child, now!

LT is now the 41st largest community in the United States and is closing in on the number 40 spot, Cleveland, Ohio, which has 444,323 population. Should catch Cleveland by the end of the month.
Hey Tim, thanks for the comment and info you left on my blog today. Now *I* feel petty. ;)
I just can't tell you how much I love my new Cue Cat!! As a homeschool mom, I simply could not keep up with the books I own. I found myself buying duplicates but, now with the Cue Cat, I am able to easily put all the books I own into Library Thing!!

Thanks, this site and my Cat are simply awesome!!
Yup, I agree with your assessment of it. There's lots of good information, but it doesn't really come together into a satisfying whole. Still, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I read it. How does it compare to The Orientalizing Revolution? I'm thinking of picking that up sometime in the near-ish future.

(As an aside--sorry, I can't help it!--wouldn't it be nice if the work page showed us who had actually read the book recently, instead of just who had catalogued it? It wouldn't really help much for obscure books like this, but for more popular books it could be really useful. *Grin*)
Nope! Sorry! But thank you for creating this wonderful website.
No worries - you might also be interested in:

Engel's book is a good example alright - obscure, but lo and behold 92 people with it here (as you pointed out on IT Conversations, this is what's great about LT)

Author David Liss has a profile page that is severely messed up. I don't think there's any additions to it (altho I can't really tell).
Tim, this is the most remarkable thing [pun intended!] I've ever seen!! I've wanted to catalog my collection for years, and the minute I came across your site, I was hooked-signed up immediately. All I wanted was a way to have all my books listed in one place-but you've also given me a place to talk about my favorite books, see what else people who have my books are reading, and generally just a way to enjoy books and other book lovers. It's heaven on-line!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Thank you Tim.

I have never changed that from the 20 books on my page to suddenly 50 books to appear on one page, so I don't know how that happened, and did not even notice that suddenly there were 50 books on a page until you pointed that out! I just noticed that were were only 33 pages from the 83. So thank you for helping me discover something new here.
And change the page back to 20per.
Sincerely,
Robert McDonald
Hi Tim,
I am unable to access the Top 50 Similar Libraries under Connection News on my profile page. It doesn't load. I would appreciate someone looking into it because I find it to be a very helpful feature of LT. Thanks very much.
~~Robin
Dear Tim,
What happened to my library? Half of it disappeared. Out of 1,645 books, my catalogue suddenly stops at page 33, and everything after that does not appear!

Help on this one, please!

Sincerely yours,
Robert McDonald
You catch this in the NYROB? Not necessarily much new there, but a nice little article nonetheless.
I tried to post my problem in the bug reporters section on the contact page but it seemed to load and when the page loaded it did so without my post as though I had never posted. I am having the same trouble tonight as I try to add books. It looks like it is loading and says new books recently added in the right side but when I try to edit the book it shows no book detials and no book title and the number of books I have in my library has not changed since yesterday after supposedly adding the first 15 books tonight.? Is the system down while not appearing to be so or has something messed up my account? I am a paid member as of March 2008
Thanks,

It seems to be something of a truism in the business that the people that are most likely to speak to you are the ones that are least likely to have something to say. It's more likely the ones that are drunk and about to bloviate that are most vocal.

You know, kind of like my incessant posting come to think of it.

Hello Tim:

Okay, I will delete everything that I put on your website.

But I will leave it on for a day just to make a few points.

First, I was doing some testing as I do with all websites that I place material on. (I can assure that on websites like American Chroncile and Best Syndication that my material is welcome even though I place a few more self-serving links that most people.)

Second, you say that I have a library with 5 of my own books.

THAT IS A LIE!

Since when is The 4-Hour Work Week my book?

And since when is Living the 80-20 Way my book?

The reviews I placed for these two books are similar to the reviews that I placed on Amazon.com.

Third, two of my books I placed in my libary are no longer in print (the third was a Spanish book which likely sell no copies) For Off the Wall: Graffiti for the Soul, I placed almost half of the content of the book in the review and intended to place all of it there when I had the time. Likewise, I intended to place all of The Lazy Person's Guide to Happiness in as well as I give away a lot of my material. In fact, I have given away over 13,000 of my real books (to charities, libraries, etc.)

But if this is not in the spirit of your website, so be it!

I know that there will always be people (these are the losers with no real accomplishments in their lives) who are resentful of creative individuals who are successful.

They would be wise to pay heed to this advice from Joseph Marshall Wade:

"If I wanted to become a tramp, I would seek information and advice from the most successful tramp I could find. If I wanted to become a failure, I would seek advice from men who have never succeeded. If I wanted to succeed in all things, I would look around me for those who are succeeding, and do as they have done."
— Joseph Marshall Wade

I can assure you that I will be getting a lot more readership and sales for my books, which have now sold over 550,000 copies worldwide.

Just today I received this email:

Dear Mr. Zelinski,

At our financial organization, you are regarded as
somewhat of a celebrity. All of our Representatives
have read your book, How to Retire Happy, Wild and Free.
We now make it a practice to give this book out to our
clients on every financial planning appointment.

We would love the opportunity to speak with you
about a speaking engagement at our fall conference
in Dallas, TX. The dates for this conference are
September 17 & 18, 2008.

We would like to discuss what it would take to get
you to our conference, what type of presentation
you would like to do and the logistics involved.

Our President of Field Operations would like the opportunity
to contact you directly to discuss this possibility.

Please let me know how we may contact you.

In any event, there are a lot classier websites than The Libary Thing for me to place the entire content from several of my books on.

Just one more thing: Tim Ferris in The 4 Hour Work Week makes the point that over 95 percent of the 200,000 books published in North America every year will sell less than 5,000 copies. I have now written 15 books and 14 have sold over 5,000 copies. (The fifteenth one will sell over 5,000 copies once it is published in English.)

As Jack Canfield says, "Results don't lie."

So long for now.

I'm just an undergrad history major, not a seminarian. I'm Eastern Orthodox though, which accounts for all the books about Christianity.
I am glad you think my review of Tarn justified, since I gather you are probably more qualified to have an opinion than I am. As I noted in my introduction to my site, much of my ancient history material was collected by my father, so I do not
have some of the more recent volumes. Of the ones you mention, I have read Wilcken
and share your view; I have not read Fox or Green. As I said in my review, of the
scholars I have read on the subject, I found Ernst Badian the most convincing, but
to my regret I don't own his work on Alexander -- I read it from a university library years ago.
Do you know anything about Literary Ventures Fund? I had never heard of them and I got a package in the mail today with six books that I assume they want me to review on my blog (they did include my blog 'name' on the package) and I have no clue how they found me (or my address). You always seem to be 'in the know', so I thought maybe you'd have info about them, other than what was in the press packet they sent me. Thanks!
Sorry, hadn't seen this on the profile, hadn't been looking at this much until today, waiting for a fix - do you still need example books? I can give you a few recent if you still need it.

My library tool bar is missing. I can't find any buttons below the tabs at the top, ie: my library, add books, etc. I can't do anything (like edit).

I ended up picking up a copy of Everything is Miscellaneous the other day when I saw at my local used bookstore as I'd thought I'd seen it mentioned hereabouts (after seeing the LT shout-out in the book, I'm guessing my memory serves)... I had to laugh when he mentioned Cass Sunstein, as I'd been meaning to ask you if you'd read Republic.Com and what your thoughts were if you had. Weinberger seems to give it a quick gloss. Any thoughts?
Please email me at tim@librarything.com with technical and others issues, and don't leave a comment here unless it's about books. Thanks, Tim
