Hey,Joanne! The Madonnas of Leningrad sounds very good. I'll have to keep that one in mind. I'm learning about so many books, through LT, it's crazy. Even if I could read a book every 2 days, I would barely make a dent. Mark
Hi, Joanne! Hope you had a nice weekend! I sure did. I started a very good book called "The Book of Air and Shadows" by Michael Gruber. It seems to be a more literary version of "The Da Vinci Code". Great stuff, so far! Talk to you soon! Mark
Hey, Joanne! Glad you enjoyed City of Thieves. I might have to reserve that one from the library. I'm nearly finished with Skeletons at the Feast. It's a good book. He's a good storyteller but not a real strong writer. Some of his prose is a little weak but overall I'm liking it! What's up next? Mark
Hi, Joanne! I've been seeing your comments on "What are you Reading Now" group. I'm of course msf59 on there. How's "City of Thieves" coming? I've started "Skeletons at the Feast". It's very good so far, quite ambitious storytelling! I've been really enjoying Library Thing. It's like a great literary family!
Mark
Hey, Joanne! No I have not read Paul Auster. Where would you suggest I start? You will love "Interpreter of Maladies". She is one of my favorite current novelists. Her latest "Unaccustomed Earth", is equally as good.
I'm starting a Japanese author by the name of Haruki Murakami, book called "After Dark". He's an excellent writer, can be a bit on the surreal side. Have you peeked into the "What are you reading now" group? It's my favorite! You can monitor what everyone is reading and hear their thoughts. Try it out! Mark
Hey, Joanne! Yes, I finished "Edgar Sawtelle". I had some mixed feelings about it. It's length really became a burden and the ending was a muddle but the book contains some outstanding writing, so I still recommend it. You may find it perfect! I picked up "Skeletons at the Feast". Hope I can get to it, in the next couple of weeks. What are you reading now? Mark
Hey, there! Hope you're having a good weekend! I'm loving "Edgar Sawtelle". I noticed, by your library, that you're a dog lover. That should be another reason for you to love this book. Dogs are featured prominently!
There are also strong echoes of "Hamlet" in this story. Sorry, you haven't got into McCarthy! Maybe you could try "All the Pretty Horses", again some time! What is your 1st name, if you don't mind me asking?
Mark
Hey there! how's the "In the Woods" coming? The follow-up book, [The Likeness], features Cassie as the protagonist, which I think is a very cool approach. I started [The Story of Edgar Sawtelle], it's a new novel and I have a feeling it will end up on my favorites of the year list. It's incredible so far. Have you read Cormac McCarthy? He's easily one of my favorite writers. Talk at you later! Mark
Hey, again! I'm nearly finished with [In the Woods], under 60 pages. Pretty intense! I saw that you had read the 2nd Kate Atkinson book, so she has a 3rd one coming out? I better get caught up. I noticed you have read [Plainsong] and it's follow-up [Eventide]. {Plainsong]is easily one of the best books I've read in the past 10 years or so. The next book was a notch below but still very good.Have you ever read [Montana 1948]? It reminds me somewhat of Haruf's style.
You seem to be an avid reader, but you don't have a lot of books in your library. Is this just a partial list? I still have a few hundred to add to mine! Take care! Mark
Hey,there! Thanks for your note! Yes, we definitely have similar tastes! Cool coincidence with "In the Woods". I'm well over halfway and I think it's excellent. It reminds me of one of my favorite crime thrillers, "Mystic River". I was going to recommend Kate Atkinson to you but I see you've already read it. That was an awesome book! Have you read her 2nd? I have it coming. Do you buy your books or go to the library? I do some of both. It's nice to own them and pass them on!
By the way, Colorado is one of my favorite states! I lived in Limon for awhile in the late 70s and I have family in Montrose & Grand Junction.I'm envious! Mark
Hey there! I saw your posting on "What are you reading now?". I've read the Ferris book (outstanding!) this year and the O'Brien book,(incredible), awhile ago. Two great choices. I have not read "Skeletons at the Feast", though. I'm guessing you would highly recommend it? I also like your library, we have similar tastes. Take care! Mark
