Om mig Your average 30-something eccentric, currently squeezing in reads at night after I finish studying for the day (vet school - love it!) I'm American and have lived in New Zealand for two years now.

The chocolate dog is Silas, a 12-year-old red/white Australian Shepherd who is obsessed with hedgehogs and other things that go bump in the night.

My god,
You've read a lot of the books I love. I have never met anyone who's read Lisa Alther, I think she's fantastic. I just came across her work by accident and I read kinflicks then original sins...have you read any more of her work? Any recommendations?

Hi Laura, have just finished Louise Wener's 'Big Blind' which I really enjoyed. Now half way through Victoria Clayton's latest, 'Girls guide to kissing frogs'. She writes characters pretty well and when work is busy it makes undemanding comfort reading which is always nice.

Have just been reading some Lissa Evans novels which are great, especially 'Spencers List'. Very funny indeed.

Hope you're well and any other recommendations greatly received. Have you finished your latest read?

Just heard Armistead Maupin on Radio 4 here in the UK, you might be able to listen again on the website.

Hi there, greetings from Scotland. I loved 'Michael Tolliver Lives.' It was interesting to read that he was going to keep the focus just to Michael but felt that all the other characters wanted to be included! It was great to see what was happening to them all and was very moving, I think you'll love it, let me know when you get it. I also felt that there was a semi-autobigraphical element happening which I think enhanced it and made it more personal. He was in Glasgow for a reading and signing session but I was away unfortuantely, however have just had a great time at the Edinburgh Book Festival.

I will keep looking through your library for more recommendations. What are you reading at the moment?

Hi, Laura. Thanks for the compliment about my library! I give much of the credit for this to my frequent forays to City Lights, which I'm guessing you are familiar with, as a former Northern Californian. (I am visiting SF now, and I went to City Lights this morning, and saw Mr. Ferlinghetti in the store. I can only hope that I look as good when I'm 88!)

As a fellow medical professional, I admire your ability to continue to read literature as a vet student. I don't think I read more than half a dozen novels through four years of med school and the first 2-1/2 years of my pediatric residency. I'm now trying to make up for lost time!

I admit that I have not yet read the Will Self book - I have a TBR pile as long as a football field. I am impressed that you have time and energy to read in vet school - I did not read anything in the years I was in med school. All I wanted to do was socialize after all the book reading - well done. (actually I was very shy, but so young then).
