Om mig Snowboarding, bungy jumping, cats, inline skating, dancing, traveling, singing, rock concerts, cross stitching, scuba diving, motorcycles, tattoos, piercings.... Oh, and I love books! I started reading when I was three and I haven't stopped since. I never go anywhere without at least one book.
I read a lot if time permits and I read fast. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to read right now. I work in the journals department (print and online journals) of the biggest library in Switzerland and study part-time to get my BS in Information Sciences.

I have 1 roommate and 2 neighbors who pretty much live here as well (I think it's because I have the better coffee machine) and 3 cats. The neighbors also have two cats who are related to two of mine and who also come here, therefore I actually feel like I have 3 roommates and 5 cats... It's a lot like "Friends" but with cats, gays and tattooed heavy metal fans.

Om mit bibliotek "A room without books is like a body without a soul." - Cicero

I buy books faster than I can read them and I'm always reading several books at the same time. They're all over the house, in my room, on the floor, in the living room, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the basement, in my neighbors' office, etc. I just don't have enough space and shelves. Or too many roommates who also want to put their things somewhere...

All but about a dozen books in my catalog are actually somewhere in my house. And they belong to me, not anyone else. Me, me, me ;-)

The reason there are not many books with a 1- or 2-star rating is that I only rate books I actually finished and if I don't like a book, I don't finish it. So most of the low-rated ones are books I had to read for school or university.

Hi, we've been talking about who's coming or not to the GD get together in London this weekend. I think you said somewhere you might not make it, but I thought I'd might check, just in case?
Hey Thalia, I've put the Four Stories on BookMooch and reserved it for you. ISBN is 0140390766. There is one small bit of the Introduction underlined and one passage in the first story (which is not The Yellow Wallpaper), other that that, it's fine. Claire
Oh no! I didnt see your comment and promised it to someone else. I have a copy of Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris if you are interested.
Absolutely! I'll reserve it for you.
I envy your ability to stop reading a book you're not enjoying! I recently returned to the USA and suddenly have more books than I could possibly read (a great library system, library sales and BookMooch) and I still can only do that when the book is truly abysmal. Of course, if I can't get through the first chapter then it's fine to put it down.
I just thought I'd let you know that I haven't received your book yet from the other sender... as soon as I do, I will list it on bookmooch with "Reserved for Thalia" in the condition notes, and shoot off an email to you right away. He sent it on April 11, ostensibly, so I expect it any day now...
~Emily
Thanks for the information on names and faces. I don't think I have my face any where yet on line, I need to do that.
I am glad you are on Flickr, gives me a real face to think of when posting on LT. There actually are many LTers on Flickr so hunting should not be too hard. Thanks. - aka Photomaggie
Hi Thalia, I just visited your Flickr site and selected you as a contact. I am fairly new on Flickr and just enjoy seeing others photographs. On flickr I am photomaggie and here maggie1944. Real first name: Karen.

LOL
Hey, I live in a street called Thaliastraat (it's in Antwerp). And you have an interesting library. I didn't need another excuse to leave a message ;-)
Wow, I can't believe you tracked that down. Unfortunately I'm not near Minneapolis, but I do have friends in that area. Perhaps we will plot a get-together one of these years. The actor who plays Birk doesn't look quite as I imagined the character. I get the impression of precocious maturity in him from the book. It's funny how we have such strong pictures of book characters in our heads.

If I ever decide to try a region 2 Swedish or German version, I will be sure to contact you. I would probably enjoy it even though I couldn't understand it. I'm guessing the movie was a very faithful adaptation? It really was very kind of you to show such interest in my search. It's great meeting up with other readers who have loved this book as I have. It's the kind of story that just doesn't get old. I can't wait til I have kids and I can read it to them!

Thanks again, ever so much!

~ww
It does help — thank you so much for helping me with this! Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be available for me (I'm in the U.S.), and I don't understand German or Swedish, sadly. I am extremely jealous of you for getting to enjoy it! It looks like the actress who played Ronia really fit the part. Maybe someday I will get my hands on a copy and watch it, language notwithstanding. Until then I will just have to keep dreaming :-)

Thank you again!

~ww
Hi Thalia! I recently read your review of Ronia, the Robber's Daughter and you mention there is a movie version? I would LOVE to get my hands on that! I've loved that book since childhood and have always wanted to see a film adaptation. I can't seem to find it anywhere though... so if you have any information that could point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Nice library, by the way! :)

~ww
Really? Did you see that thread in Happy Heathens? ;-)

I kid, it happens--trolls are everywhere. No, I agree with you, I love the people on LT (from where ever in the world they reside). This is the only site that I've ever truly loved, and it's the people here that make it so cool. Also, I'm a big fan of the quality of communication--people actually write in complete words and sentences here, unlike most of the Internet.
Thanks for the reply about the "wolkenlose tag". I won't combine with heart songs if they're not the same.
"in the US I met more uneducated and ignorant people than ever before", I hope it's no one I know ... though, it very well could be. ;-)
Thalia,
you have a work by Annie Proulx named "Der Wolkenlose Tag". Do you know what the original title is? Thanks.
Thanks! In all honesty the Swedish team kind of under-perform as well, the defence haven't been this bad in decades...
But hopefully it will get better in the upcoming months :-)
Hello Thalia

Just seen your kitty-surgery story in the Green Dragon, and want to add my 2c-worth of sympathy. Your kitty is very beautiful. One of ours had the same problem for we don't know how long, probably about 2 1/2 years, and we only found out when he stopped breathing under anaesthetic at the emergency vet's having his foot stitched. A couple of weeks later the proper vet reassembled his innards for "only" ZAR 5000 (about US$720) and, despite the fact that he has 2 pellets lodged near his spine -- souvenirs of growing up in Pretoria -- he once again keeps his pet humans exactly where he wants them.

Hope that makes you feel better, and that your kitty recovers completely
Hugh
Wow! I too hate summer. You don’t hear to many people say that. I don’t care for the heat, plus, all the bugs come out in summer which makes hiking and camping much less enjoyable. Plus, when you camp in the winter, once the sun goes away, you have no choice but to crawl into your warm sleeping bag and read!

75 mph in the dark is probably the best way to see “the Springs”. ;-) No, honestly, there are some great things to see and do here; but it is by no means the best part of Colorado. You’ll have to stop and look around if you get the chance on your next visit. Places like Palmer Park, Garden of the Gods, and Cheyenne Canyon are very beautiful, and we have (I think) one of the best little downtown areas. And a drive to the top of the 14,115 foot (4,302 m), Pikes Peak is well worth it! The air is a little thin up there, but the view is spectacular.
Ah, very cool. Glenwood is beautiful. And two of my very best friends live in Ft. Collins. I also have friends throughout the Denver area. I have lived in Westminster, Boulder, and all over Colorado Springs.

Fair enough. Switzerland is more crowded than Colorado. For me though, it seems bad here. The population of Colorado Springs alone as easily doubled since I was born, and the entire Front Range is the same way. And comparatively speaking, New Mexico (another place I love, and where I spend as much time as I can) is slightly larger than Colorado and has under 2 million people living in the state. Conversely, Colorado's population is over 4 million, which you still have beaten by 3 million, so I’ll stop whining now. ;-)

And yes, I can imagine that camping can be a bit, um, cold there? I like winter camping, in fact I do a lot of my camping November through February, but I'm guessing there are a few places in Switzerland which may be a little too cold for my liking, eh?
Yes, I'm a night owl, too.

I guess I'm a weird American, as none of my top three favorite sports are American. In no particular order they are, rugby, football (soccer), and hockey (though it's almost an American sport).

I was born in Colorado Springs, and have lived in some part of Colorado for most of my life. It is easily one of the best states in the nation, but it's starting to get very crowded as more and more people move here from across the country. This has some of us looking for new places to live, though I'm reluctant to move for fear that I'd miss it too much, especially because I love camping, hiking, snowshoeing, and similar things that Colorado offers in abundance. When it comes to outdoor fun, it's hard to beat Colorado.

When did you live in Colorado, and where did you live?
Argh! I have a problem: when it gets late in Switzerland, Sweden, and the UK, all the talk in the GD turns to baseball!

Oh well, I enjoy the real sport talk during the earlier parts of your day.

Thanks for the hijack, and keep up the good thread-hijacking work. ;-)

I look forward to some more football chat tomorrow.
I would really love to get a cat when I settle down more. It feels no library is really complete without a cat atop a stack of books, oddly.

(Ich habe in Deutschland gewohnt, und meine Eltern verbringen viel Zeit in der Schweiz.)
(Of course she can read. She just doesn't do it when you're looking.)

She has such pretty paws - especially in the large view! What's her name?
I love it that your cat takes an interest in Nietzsche, by the way. ;P
Thalia - I just posted a rant on gas prices and rural vrs city thinking. I probably came across as very surly. I am sorry. I know Americans often seem spoiled and whiny. I don't feel that way, myself of course!!

The reason I'm here is to tell you that you are only the second person I ever met whose name is Thalia. I have an Aunt Thalia, and I thought the name was unique. (Wait a minute - wasn't one of the Greek Muses named Thalia? Maybe so.) Anyway, it is a beautiful name.

You also have a beautiful cat. I never owned a cat - or was owned by a cat! - until I was married, but my KittyMonster is the love of my life. I'll have to see what kinds of books she prefers.

Nice visiting with you.

Mary Lou
Oh ja, da sagst du was!
;)

Beeindruckende Arbeit!
Dear Thalia, i peeked in because i saw something about italian and thought you were a different Thalia who edits a fine journal of literary translation. I see we have no books in common (though i only have about 50 up and half are in japanese) -- let me say i have no german readers i know of other than Mike Reich whose photo of microscopic sea cucumber ossicles graces the cover of my book Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! but i so want German readers! And i want to get in touch with hans peter duerr, with whom i exchanged a letter maybe 15 years ago to tell him about the books i have published in english, for his Traumzeit is the one book i have read about shamanism that doesn't make me want to puke (i am plagiarizing what Blyth said about Suzuki and Zen) and he is the only author i know who writes notes as long and as interesting as mine. I am afraid, the sea cucumber, though the perfect ding en sich (sp?) won't German, for a water sausage would kill all 21 metaphors by which the 900 haiku (all transl from japanese) are chaptered! But my most recent book, on new year haiku, could be well translated into german, so if you know of any good translators i should contact . . . please check out my books at amazon, google or my website, paraverse.org! or in my library, here! keigu (robin d. gill)
Hi Thalia
I have just read your review of the The Book Thief. I too was stunned, wanting to read on and yet not wanting it to end. So much depth of thinking and reflection that was breathtaking. I have only just begun my cataloging as I am a new member, it could take a while!
am the same exact way :}
Yay, Chili Peppers! I saw them in Greenville a few years ago.

BTW, I love your kitty! Is he a fan or detractor of Nietzsche?
I can't remember reading any classics until I left home, and I was a voracious reader as a child. I wondered why nobody ever introduced me to them, because my mother and grandmother were certainly well read, but now I agree with you. Life experience helps you understand them much more. I think I need to read Jane Austin again. When I first read her, I thought it was sort of gossipy and to no point, but now, 20 years later, I think I would appreciate them more. I always liked the humor in them. Glad you liked Jane Eyre.
Glad to see you're reading Jane Eyre, it has to be one of my favorite (if not my favorite) classic novel. Let me know what you think of it compared to Wuthering Heights. I have my own opinion which I will keep to myself until asked for :)
Hi Thalia, did you pose your black kitty on that book on purpose? :) We take photos of our Siamese at Christmas in amongst my daughter's angel collection. He always has red eyes in the photos, and looks like quite a different kind of angel! I tried to respond to your message to MrKris on the What Books Are You Reading List, but I'm not sure it came through. Sometimes (often), verses taken out of context can be quite confusing. I love to talk about questions, if you have any about that verse, feel free. I can see see from your profile that you are a "passionate" person, but my understanding of God's nature is that He made you that way. It is only when those passions and lusts consume you to the detriment of yourself or others that they become sin. I don't want to preach, this may have been way more than you were looking for. Take care, and take care of that cat. It is beautiful.
Gregor Sampsa awoke one morning from unsettling dreams and found himself transformed... I like this version and I am so glad you said the original was better as that is what I think. It is nice to read someone with the same idea as myself.
Hello Talia, I agree with whole heartedly regarding Ghostwritten, it’s a wonderful book. Number 9 Dream is equally good, but I found the acclaimed “Cloud Atlas” very hard going, and “Black Swan Green” nice, but really just another adolescent boy growing up tale. I really hope David Mitchel hasn’t lost the simplicity, and quirkiness of his first two books. I see you have some Murakami too, imagine sitting in a bar with those two great minds.

“The Go Between” was one of the first grown-up books that affected me. Along with “A Town like Alice”, it was my Mum’s favorite book, and she brought it for me when I was about thirteen, a great age to read it. A “Catcher in the Rye” for us sensitive English boys!
Thank you so much for your detailed reply. It encouraged me to go and find my copy and start reading it straight away. I have discovered that a hardback book weighing over 1kg is NOT a good read in bed but I did manage a few chapters. Some books are just better read at a table and I think this is one of them!
I loved his Otherworld series too and bought each one as soon as it was published. He is a brilliant writer and his characters are always sympathetic. I'll let you know what I think of War of the Flowers just as soon as I have finished it but I will definitely take longer than your two days. How ever do you manage to read that fast? I might make better headway into my 'to be read' pile if I had that talent. Thanks again for your lovely reply.
I have just seen that you have read 'War of the Flowers' by Tad Williams. This is sitting on my shelf, in my 'to be read' pile, and has been there rather a long time. I think it is the sheer size of it that is putting me off but I know that once I start reading it I will be unable to put it down. Did you enjoy it? Any thoughts about it? I would love to hear your comments.
Just wanted to say that I love your cat :) And you also have The Phantom of the Opera :)
I thought you would know about Swiss German. Hasn't NEBIS changed from swg to gsw yet?
Never noticed that Sicilian was on that page, that's funny. As someone! said you learn something new each day.

(Oh, and if you haven't noticed or guessed, I'm in cataloging at UB Basel)
ohmigod no! it's by Jill Thompson, from The Little Endless Storybook (Sandman for kids ;) But thanks! If I could draw, I would draw like that... Cool to hear that you can find SiP in Switzerland.
Vorarlberg, yo.
wen i froga dar -- wo sand sie i dr Schwiz?
thanks so much for checking that. How odd, that they all have the same ISBN. But now at least I know not to merge this volume of yours with anything else.
Thalia -- I have been working on combining Annie Proulx's editions into sets of "works" according to the structure Tim set up. I haven't been able to find any record of Der wolkenlose Tag with or without the ISBN you entered manually. I did check Amazon Deutschland but I don't doubt that their information is incomplete. Could you possibly tell me date of publication/publisher? I'm really trying to pinpoint which translation this is. Thanks.
