Om migIntroduction To Me: (User # 34,867)
I'm married and mother of three grown children. I work as quality auditor for a home health agency and as administrator for our family-based concrete contracting company. You can usually find me auditing nursing records, baking cookies, browsing the LibraryThing fora, bookcrossing, buying used books, cooking organic vegetables, doing sudoku, drinking coffee, eating chocolate, feeding 3 feral cats, or reading (not necessarily in this order). In the past, I have been called "the Johnny Appleseed of books". :)

My Reading Preferences:
I like both fiction and non-fiction. I prefer English translations of foreign (especially Middle Eastern or Asian) novels and books by lesser known authors. I'm attracted to matte-covered trade paperbacks as they seem more exotic than other books somehow.

I'm glad that you liked the SantaThing books so much at first glance; I hope they hold up in your estimation once you've gotten a chance to read them.

Actually I thought there was so much Sturm and Drung because there are passions involved in getting this done.
There are some books over at Amazon, where I have scanned through the list after I have rated a book, or looking at book 2 after reading book 1 to see if this gets any better and I do look though a great deal of the reviews. Or if I have done a review i consider insightful, I go take a look and see if others see the book in a similar way. I think that type of use is where you might like me to be a cross commentator.
I think that the CoR thread is so long is because people state their opinions and even when backed up with a reason, many being similar, it just can't die because they all need to be refuted by each side. (People will write negative, people are good and with flags you can delete it, opt-in, opt-out, no, yes, and so the thread is now circular, like the worm oroborus.)
Best back at you,
David

I think there is a fault with the logic of your last Comment on review comment. If you are looking at a work, the most recent five reviews are shown at that work page if I have that right, But then you can keep reading all the reviews there. So not just your new reviews that you type, but the reviews that are on the books get read and that is where comments would show.
What the thing to decipher in regards to your post is whether people get to a review of book because they look at all the reviews under the review tab, or they do it by the book.
In regards to much of the negativity I think that this thread keep engendering, it is the Opt-Out policy that can't seem to be compromised. It forces all who participate now to change, rather than those who want the feature to add it with an Opt-In.

I worked for six years in 2 law offices since Dad wanted me to be a lawyer but it wasn't for me... Good luck with your daughter. I see you are in Maryland. Out here in CA there are too many lawyers so some I know in the profession have had to move on since they are fighting for clients. Is anyone trying the various comment threads work arounds? Are they filling some of the need?

You and I had some good dialogue before about Comments on Reviews, but I have to tell you, Zoe has just killed the whole thing for me and made an ardent enemy out of someone who just thought the idea bad. The more she writes, the more I know she is a kid who has no street cred to talk. I was like that when I was in my early twenties. I knew it all. I don't know if you felt that way. Her attitude though is that of a dictator and that has ruined any chance that I would listen to a proposal that she backs. She has no negotiation skills, but has her list and means to get everything on it.
I hope you do not take my posts in that thread as attacks on you. But she passed the line of civility and now that life is shorter than it was when I was 24, why do I need such a person ruining mine?

Just adding you to my interesting libraries... I see you're reading [Garlic and Sapphires]. I really enjoyed that book, and her other ones. We lived in New York for a while when she was still the food critic and I loved reading her stories.
The pigeon book by Meir Shalev is languishing. It's not a hard read, and it's good, but I am in the middle of organising our move to Switzerland and looking after the 2 kids for 6 weeks, so I'm not getting long enough to really read much. And I've started a fantastic non-fiction (fantastic so far anyway) - a History of Modern Britain by Andrew Marr. I might try again today if I can get the kids to stare at a DVD!
Have a good weekend
